One of the consequences of believing only gold is money is opposing fractional reserve banking because it basically creates money out of thin air. Libertarian conservatives and ancaps have an almost religious fascination with gold, and they blame pretty much all economic woes on fractional reserve banking https://mises.org/library/faults-fractional-reserve-banking quote:Austrian economists, and Ludwig von Mises in particular, have shown that fractional-reserve banking under commodity money necessarily causes economic problems on a grand scale. This is because banks then engage in circulation-credit expansion — that is, they issue money through lending that is not backed by real savings. E: the mental gymnastics in that article to justify why fractional reserve banking isn't a free market creation by private business are very funny. Fractional reserve banking is actually a government creation because the government isn't using regulations to ban it! VitalSigns fucked around with this message at 23:47 on Feb 13, 2022 |

It's the idea that, because FRB allows banks to "multiply" money, it's bad and causes inflation and poo poo. It's the same kind of zeroith-order thinking that makes someone a goldbug.

Have y'all seen the latest Ben Garrison cartoon? The real bomb is the poo poo he writes in his blog to accompany it: quote:The problem is, it’s not true. Our country was founded as a Republic, not a democracy. The word ‘democracy’ does not appear in our Constitution. The founding fathers were wary of democracy. They knew democracies were dangerous and unstable. They end up leading to totalitarianism. It’s why Karl Marx stated, “Democracy is the road to socialism.” When you hear our politicians say ‘our democracy,’ what they really mean is ‘our socialism.’ So Ben Garrison is explicitly anti-democracy. I loving hate this guy, may his balls be chewed off by diseased wolves. I bet if he lived 300 years ago, he'd be a total pro absolute monarchy guy, defending the rights of nobles to keep the lands and title that they took by force. Right-wingers tend to have very weird ideas about how the world works. Kurzon fucked around with this message at 01:09 on Feb 14, 2022 |

The most generous reading of this dumb-rear end argument is the idiots making it are saying that "Republic = Representative Democracy" and "Democracy = Direct Democracy". I think the vast majority who say the "it's a republic not a democracy" have no idea what it means. Someone on right wing radio said it to justify the Republican winning a presidential election despite not winning the popular vote and they thought it sounded smart and it allows them to believe this is the Right Way as defined by the infallible Founding Fathers and therefore unquestionable. It goes no deeper than that.

It goes no deeper than that. Yeah, it's mostly just to justify all the times the Republicans have lost the popular vote but won the electoral vote. They had the complete opposite take on "republic not a democracy" back when states passed laws banning same sex marriage by popular vote and then had those laws overturned by the courts, with talk about how they were overturning the will of the people. And as has been said before, if the electoral college ever started favoring Democrats instead of Republicans, the right would absolutely start trying to abolish it.

Tatsuya Ishida was always based. Remember his phase where he was attacking prostitution and pornography every other strip? He was a called a militant feminist back then, but now that I think of it, there's nothing really feminist there. Modern feminists don't care much about prostitution. They care about things like job discrimination, the gender pay gap, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and abortion — things which Ishida never touched upon in his strips. He was never a feminist. You know who also hates prostitution and porn? Conservative Christians.

We do the work, and they get all the profit. Junior, forget hemp, what we must sow are the seeds of revolution. We must seize the means of production." 1/22 "You're right, personal responsibility is a myth passed on by polluting megacorps! I need to pressure my lawmakers into more environmental regulations, and to primary those that refuse." "Wow, good point. We must seize the means of production. " 1/23 Any day now, Ratman says, and then I can finally get off. 1/26 "Wait, what does sports performance have to do with academics? In fact, why are we paying for something that's practically required to make a livable wage? Why must these girls compete for a future? Clearly, we must seize the means of production." 1/27 "Blathering goat! I was raised in the culture of Christianity; immersed in it from the day of my birth. I am intimate with its teachings, and its critical flaws. I cannot speak the same of a religion I do not know. I cannot criticize a culture alien to me. All I know is that religion is the opiate of the masses, and I wish to free them so that we may seize the means of production." 1/28 "Earl, my old friend. Do you know see what you have been reduced to? You huddle in cold, cramped conditions just to imbibe deadly chemicals that offer nothing but fleeting joy. The fiends who sell these have put a price on your very life. I will not allow them to kill you like this, Earl. I will see to it that they pay for their crimes. And to do that, we must be seize the means of production." 1/29 "You swine. You complete fool. We must tax the soporifics that keep us dazed and helpless, and make firearms accessible to the people for our ultimate goal: seizing the means of production." 1/31 "Curious, we all seem to be struggle despite our varied backgrounds and histories. I wonder what we must do..." 1/31 "Listen here, you cur, I will not patronize an establishment that treats its workers like a burden.
