I just can't get over the gap between the reality of our actual military capabilities (more admirals than battlelships), and the media view that we might go to war against russua over ukraine and win. But then I guess the press has always been completely detached from reality when it comes to the armed forces. I had to read american sources to find out that the americans were very unimpressed with how our boys performed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Reading the uk press and you get the impression we were teaching the unsophisticated yanks how to do counter insurgency warfare. Scotland gets half the space of the queens coach, makes sense

I listened to a good episode of behind the bastards about Hiram Maxim, it came up that the reporting of our one sided victories in colonial wars in the late 19th century never mentioned the maxim gun. All the paintings would depict riflemen in honourable combat, rather than a machine gunner mowing down people by the thousand.

I thought the consensus was the UK did in fact do much, much better than the US at counterinsurgency, and what upset them when investigating was the realisation that the UK was just going with the old empire periphery tactic of paying local powerbrokers off to maintain the status quo, instead of murdering everyone who didn't kiss the ring twice daily

British counter-insurgency's subtle cunning imperial era touches, like pouring petrol into a cave to burn a stubborn rebel to death.

quote:The River Thames sludge fairs[1] were held on the tideway of the River Thames in London, England in some months, starting at least as early as the late 7th century[2] until the early 19th century. Most were held between the early 17th and early 19th centuries during the period known as the Little Sludge Age, when the river sludged over most frequently. During that time the British sludge was more severe than it is now, and the river was wider and slower, further impeded by the 19 piers of the medieval Old London Bridge which were removed in 1831.
