A bit brain-dead, this, even by Labour standards.
Just imagine how many people have got videos of Keith, coked out of his brain, saved on an external hard drive for just this eventuality.
I mean, poo poo, is there anyone on the Labour front bench who doesn't look like they've personally funded a year's worth of guns for a Colombian cartel?

Dude, Labour have to show they're the party of law & order and the only way to do that is to come out with more and more punitive punishments. By the time of the next GE they'll be saying they'll make it legal for you to batter anyone that looks at you funny.

Hello, a quick request.

Talking to someone who took Starmer's leadership pitch at face value and trying to point to reasons why they in fact *could* have known he was a slippery weasel back in 2020. I seem to remember Sienna Rodgers of LabourList saying something at the time about him being a politician without any political beliefs, but can't track it down. Would appreciate the help if anyone else remembers it and can find it!

iirc he had the backing of both Labour First and Progress (one of which also backed Jessflips until lol, I think Nandy had Blue Labour but I'm pretty drat sure he had 2 of the 3), which should have told voters everything they need to know

Also he's a cop who resigned from the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers because membership is inconsistent with being DPP and/or a cop, which he is

However, I can't really see what you gain from this argument. I know lots of smart people who were hoodwinked, we were undergoing a massive collective trauma at the time. It's okay to be wrong sometimes, just learn from it & move on

Sienna Rodgers posted:

He’s not left wing. I find it genuinely unbelievable and a huge failing of the ‘Labour left’, that people are actually swirling this narrative of ‘he really wants to be more left wing secretly but he’s being held back as he builds this kind of broad coalition’. I think that’s absolutely laughable... I think he is apolitical, I think he lacks politics and that’s the reason why members should be a bit wary.

More broadly, there were people ITT pointing out that, aside from joining dots on his voting record, whenever he espoused his left-wing credentials they were always qualified - "I am a socialist but it has to be the practical, sensible sort of socialism." (a paraphrase). Plus the whole 'is anyone who has a knighthood and was DPP really going to deliver change, let alone radical change, from within the political establishment?' thing.

The British Empire was built on cups of tea, and if you think I'm going into battle without one, you're sorely mistaken!

Also you can just search his tenure as DPP to unearth any vaguely left-wing tendencies.

Oh, he frequently let off cops and threw the book at gays? Oh well.

Don't mention it :)

Apropos of nothing much, I made an ill-advised dive into the politics section of another forum (other forums?!), to find someone earnestly speculating on how the Conservatives are set for a youth-vote groundswell because:

1) pensioners are now Baby Boomers, the children of the 1960s and are much more receptive to Lab/Lib Dem politics.
2) 20-40 year olds are settling into adult life and having kids, and are worried about high crime, immigration, taxes, the cost of living crisis, the farce of the Green Agenda, public debt and overcrowding.

:psyduck:

It's a theory that kinda holds up on its own assumptions...but falls apart the moment you consider anything that's actually happening out in the world. It's the sort of opinion that can only be formed by someone who doesn't meaningfully interact with anyone else in their day to day life.

I was going to say that the 'farce' bit of the Green Agenda is entirely down to the government throwing it at corrupt sinecures rather than there actually being a real Green Agenda, but the same is true for all the rest.

I've heard people blaming 'net zero' for cost of living increases even though that's something that has not even started and was only committed to in the vaguest of terms. It's like the ghosts of Scargill brainworms where if we suddenly stopped giving a poo poo about the environment (have they checked the rivers?) then we'd all get cheap coal which nobody who's ever used house coal would actually want to burn but they haven't so it can exist in their imagination and it can all be mined by bogles so nobody's uncle gets black lung.
