I'd say that there's Strogg Quake (2/4/Wars), one Quake with eldritch horror and two arena ones. I'd love a new Quake that mixes Strogg with Quake 1 enemies seamless via slipgates. You go from humans vs Stroggs skirmishes to a castle and so.

Would be funny to see the Strogg fighting weird eldritch horror magic and not comprehending why they're losing

I loved playing it on release because we had cable internet so on Facing Worlds I'd just get up on our tower with a sniper rifle and headshot all the kids on dial-up as they spawned because there'd be a half second before they started moving.

There was some service back then that tracked your stats and at one point I had the headshot record.

Yeah UT99 had that one gun that was like a decent damage single shot laser rifle, and alt fire was a weird slow moving ball of plasma, but if you shot the ball with the main laser it would make a dope explosion so you could use it as a timed rocket to gently caress people up real bad.

(I think 99 had the primary and secondary for that weapon reversed though?)

In my mind, Quake 2 is the prequel to Quake 1.

Humans fight the Strogg, who actually use Slipgate technology in Q2 to transport their fleets across space. And we know that any slipgate is basically an open invitation to the Horrors From Beyond. Combine that with the way that Q1's enforcers look and function a lot like the Strogg, and that the Strogg's sigil is all over the techbase levels in Q1, and a pretty strong idea starts forming in my mind...

...the Strogg are not a natural species. They literally couldn't be; most of them are made from human bodyparts, and even within the palace of the Makron there is a suspiciously human alphabet on signs and machines. The Makron is one of the few real alien creatures, and even he's almost unrecognizably modified. Whatever originally lived on Stroggos was disassembled and recombined a long time ago. My guess is that the original species opened a slipgate, got gulped up by whatever they opened on the other side and emerged as a series of bio-mechanical horrors, a point of entry for the eldritch horror that lay beyond the gateway. I don't know what the Strogg that attacked earth looked like, but they were probably incredibly alien compared to the enemies we fight in Q2. If they were humanoid, that means that there was a previous point of contact between the two species.

In the first case, I believe that Quake 1 follows directly on Quake 2. Humanity has secured a foothold on Stroggos, leading to the discovery of slipgate technology. Humanity would have to re-engineer this if their fleet ever wants to return home, since they destroyed the slipgate/black hole machine in order to secure earth during Q2. But there's something on the other side, and this entity starts reaching out through the gate. And then? "You get the phonecall at 4 A.M. By 5:30 you're in the secret installation..."

Alternatively, the aftermath of Quake 1 leads to a bunch of Quake's forces and victims scattered across the universe, resulting in the Strogg.

This may be the most nerdy poo poo I ever wrote, but I make the mistake of interpreting every game's environment like its Dark Souls and end up with a bunch of insane theories.

Yeah. I've played them both multiplayer within the past year and the movement, weapons, maps, and general balance are all much worse in ut99. Q3 is just a tighter feeling game.

I loved ut2004 Onslaught at the time but going back it feels like a mess tbh. I'm really not a fan of the UT dodge jumping movement and it doesn't work great on the huge maps. For TDM, 2004 is probably better than 99 since the weapons are a bit better balanced. The new UT that was dropped for Fortnite was promising on that front too, which is sad.

The problem with this is that, if I’m not mistaken, Quake 1 is the beta test for the slip gates/portals, so they wouldn’t been used “publicly” until later.

Quake II came so close to being cool, but the actual gamefeel and balance of the game wreck its potential. There are too many weapons that are too much alike, and only the railgun really has the punch a good Id weapon should have. The animations absolutely suck, with no weight to them and no muzzle flash. Likewise, the enemies have too many similar entries (machine gun guy vs. bigger machine gun guy vs. huge machine guy with grenade launcher), and their attacks are both usually weak and very difficult to "perfect play", both due to the preponderance of hitscans and due to the player's limited mobility compared to Quake or Doom.

Playing Quake, I get hit way less often but enemies rip big chunks out of my health, and each hit feels like the consequence of a mistake I made. Playing Quake II, I am constantly being nibbled away at, and success vs. failure mostly concerns the duration and rate of the nibbling (though there is rarely much challenge anyway).

Plus the music is incredibly repetitive and one-dimensional, with no variety, dynamics, atmosphere, or personality. It's like an algorithm was fed a Spotify playlist of '90s Pantera clones and spat out a homogenous stream of riff salad.

Also, Quake 2s super shotgun is the second best SSG ever.

I mean, it lifts the mid tier Strogg off of their feet and knocks them back several feet. It completely neutralizes the melee Strogg.

Also, quad damage + chain gun is SO GOOD.
