Comrade Fakename posted:When I was in sixth form our college’s union went on strike because they’d had 12 consecutive votes of no confidence over the college’s principal, all of which were unanimous against him. Anyway, my maths A Level lecturer was in a different union that didn’t believe in striking, considering teaching to be a profession like nursing that was too important to risk a strike. She informed us that on the strike day, the class would be held as normal, and if we didn’t attend we’d be marked as absent. So, she demanded that we cross a picket line in order to go to maths. In NI here there are at least two teacher unions, and for some past strikes we would go in and just some teachers would be in, the others have empty classes The good days where when all your classes had teachers who were off. happyhippy fucked around with this message at 03:59 on Feb 17, 2022 |

I apparently owe tens of thousands and forget about it for months and years on end. Silly joke loan that seems to exist purely to convince working class people they're going to gently caress themselves by taking it and not to go to uni after all. I am sort of waiting for the government to decide to throw everyone with one into the workhouses retroactively but yes otherwise as I do not ever expect to earn enough to pay it I am not really bothered, eventually they're going to have to write them off because most people are going to default on them.

I'm getting close to mine being written off without ever having earned enough to pay anything and sometimes the company sends me hopeful little notes all ' you can make payments if you want any time!' Nah I'm all right thanks

At the end of a long night, obviously, but just feel the need to express that I love you all. From Barry to owly to borrovan to jaeluni, you’ve somehow ended up as my most reliably support network, even if it’s just reading your posts. I know it’s frowned upon but I’d really love to buy you all a pint, or a cuppa, one day.

It's literally just a graduate tax (which sure shouldn't be a thing either) in all but name, but under neoliberalism everything must be expressed in market language. Whether you give a poo poo or not, freezing the payment thresholds is still relevant. Used to be that as average pay went up, so did the thresholds for when you start paying/how much you pay back - same as how your personal allowance/tax-free amount goes up every year with inflation. Not anymore. Your graduate tax just went up in real terms, and it'll continue to go up, and even those who currently don't earn enough to be paying them back will soon enough start having to pay some portion, often to go on top of the rest of the effects of inflation giving real-terms pay cuts. And before you (perhaps not specifically you but the plural form of "you") might have had a chance at repaying them at some point and being free of them, if you were a middle-earner. Now nobody except for people who go on to be finance wankers and those with rich parents will ever pay them off. So yeah, it's a tax on middle-earners more than anything else. It's regressive as poo poo.

Bobby Deluxe posted:Ages ago someone in this thread put forward the theory that Corbyn drove centrists mad because they love to think of themselves as the nice guys, so as soon as someone came along offering to be nicer and genuinely improve things they were clamouring to tear him down so they could reclaim the high ground. I've advanced a similar theory as the explanation of why liberals side with fascists over socialists a few times. It's not about thinking of themselves as nice guys though. It's just that they don't want to help anyone. With fascists they can tut and present themselves as the sensible option, but if someone ever successfully managed to improve things then the voters might realise that there is no reason to vote for a liberal who won't even try. In a nutshell: "better things aren't possible" isn't just the centrist mantra, it's the fundamental plank of their existence.

It just gets replaced on the normal schedule, most notes will be gone within a couple of years but the coins will keep rattling around until they change the planchet - until they changed the size of the 5 and 10p bits in the 90s you'd still get the occasional George VI 1 or 2 shilling coin in your change (none older though because before him they actually had silver in them).

Prole, your commentary last night is exactly how I feel about it, I wouldn't consider going in in any circumstance if I hadn't been specifically asked to help the Union with a legal issue related to the strike. Like sure there's all kinds of justifications for why it's not an issue but... you just don't do that. Ever. ...except that I'm apparently the only member with relevant expertise for a current problem, and I need my books to fully address it. Picket day today anyway, so the dilemma's deferred for a bit (& I can chat to the Committee about it on the picket lines)

I've got various bags of old pre-decimal ha'pennies people have found in drawers and given to me over the years, I've got at least 4 different monarchs on them. It used to be pretty standard to have an old king on some of your money, and even now you'll get coins with different portaits of the queen on them, which have changed about as often as monarchs usually last.
