I get the feeling this is to establish that Loup is willing to kill or “go too far” and really is as unstable as we think since, up until now, he hasn’t actually hurt many people.

The problem is “goes too far” is pretty hard to establish with attempted rape since many people would not see murdering or severely injuring a rapist as all that extreme. If this is Tom’s intent, then it would have been better with one elf boy and her just getting flirty and Loup acts like a sociopath in response.

Do you think this is funny?
I'm thinking about an alternate scene where they try to trick or scam her in some embarrassing way that's cruel but not creepy. In that case Loup going ninja killer mode and physically hurting someone would instantly be a much more resounding "wow that's extreme, dude."

Yeah like, it depends on what we're supposed to take away from this scene, but it's guaranteed that it could have been portrayed without the creepiness lmao.

Are we supposed to be rooting for Loup here? Thinking he's overreacting? Is this supposed to be showing that the robo-people aren't prepared for the world? That the elves are stereotypes of refugees? I honestly can't even tell if Lana is uncomfortable or not, she mostly just seems innocently unaware of the implications happening, like a small child.

It's just...so uncomfortable and gross on so many levels.

gently caress, man. This sequence is just... it's not even a craft level problem, from root conception this scene is just gross. And it makes Lana and the elf chavs both much, much worse that the story was building towards this interaction.

I'm thinking back to how the elves have been portrayed up to this point, and the only positive depictions of them seem to have happened in the forest, excluding specific named characters. Otherwise they've just been displaced background characters confusedly commenting on/attacking the cast at various points.

And now they're attempted rapists.

This isn't really a good look.

With a character that's coded as a teenager, no less!

And the misogynist "female character is too airheaded to realize the Dangers of this world and must be protected by strong man who physically threatens the other men" trope.

The one good thing I can say is that Loup has a funny face in the last panel.

Hmm. "She Gave Us An Ocean" started in Feb. 2020. Is it after this point that it started to seem like things were going downhill? I think my first little pang of disappointment was how too tidy the resolution of the tic-toc bird thing was, and that was in June of 2020, so this makes some sense.

Mercifully, most of the comments / reddit posts are not like this. On the other hand, most of them are talking about how great Loup is now, and how naïve Lana is, so if that was Tom's goal with these strips (ugh) then it seems to have worked!!

e: seeing that some of the comments on the comic are obviously doubles that have been submitted twice, it wouldn't surprise me if the comment "approval" process is just an automated one to ensure there's no bot spam and to filter out slurs etc. Though maybe that's just denial on my part, I have to hope these aren't personally approved

Lots of other valid points in here but these sum it up for me and I can't quote everyone.

I legit thought we'd have some sort of interesting if awkward, maybe even fun interaction between these two groups (though maybe not Loup) when they first bumped into each other, but loving yikes. It also makes me wonder why Tom chose elves for this and not human students, though I don't think he should have chose this direction at all.

I am also done. Thanks for the comic recommendations people have been giving. I'll have to start reading some.

A bit of a muddy answer that sounds like he's just been letting whatever through without looking because they'll be deleted in two days anyway. Like, on one hand yeah that's extra work and psychic damage for someone with a difficult job, but on the other hand it's a YA comic and we had someone in this very thread say "I have recommended this to young girls I know". Maybe hire someone. I'm sure there's superfans that would volunteer for the position.

Yeah that’s what I’m referring to. There’s no excuse for comments like that to be approved, let alone across multiple strips. These are comics that make people uncomfortable and comments like that are irresponsible to write and irresponsible to approve. If some idiot was posting “R34 please” on a comic with Kat’s parents or w/e I wouldn’t care, but on pages like this, and especially bringing up gangbanging, the moderator/Tom should be extra careful not to let that stuff slip through. Also, not to go all “think of the children” but kids are reading too.

As for “debate me!!”, no thanks. I have roommates that are cartoonists and also read GC that I can have a discussion with, and I’d rather do that, and just read here and GC comments to see what peoples different perspectives are (twitter’s dead silent on it, of all places). I don’t see eye to eye with the most negative ones but I am not gonna challenge them either. This isn’t like a couple of weeks ago, these are pretty complicated pages to discuss and like one poster already said, no one should be told they’re wrong for feeling upset (I don’t think that way about anyone’s opinion anyway).

I just think it sucks that odious creep posting is sneaking through on GC’s comment page. It used to be more of a creep free-for-all before the moderation, way back in the day, like just after football head era. People who wouldn’t stop commenting on Anne’s beauty, it would sometimes get dunked on in the webcomic thread… at least I think it predates this thread. I’ve been on SA a long time lol.
