Looking up some random article about Birbalsingh:quote:kids form silent lines waiting to go in. They are in dark blue blazers, ties knotted high, a breeze rippling hems and headscarves. They carry books in transparent pouches bearing their names in Sharpie. The man who is their head of year is shouting a pep talk that will last two minutes exactly — because everything here is timed to the second — and includes words like resilience and perseverance. I know that what I want from school is a school-appointed class bully shouting "resilience" at me every morning. Chairwoman of the social mobility commission. God damnit thread, you've got me making popcorn. And I'm going to put some of that Kernels cheese seasoning on it. It's not bad. Not as good as the stuff you buy in bags like crisps but it's like 80-90% of the way there IMO. Also I guess I could set up like a thing where I ship people North American snacks for money now I live in Canada. Would anybody be interested in that?

Deketh posted:I have to renew my energy tariff for another term, I've been on fixed for a couple of years and terrified of energy costs now and upcoming. What do you think is the way to go now, fixed or variable? They are estimating that variable will be half the annual price of the fixed which seems highly questionable, but I really have no idea about this stuff Standard Variable is probably your best bet for the time being. The price cap for April through September is currently well below the cost of buying that power and gas on the wholesale markets. The fixed price deals available to you will be based on a market average over the time period that you're fixing for. So, you'll be paying through the nose - even more than the price cap tariff - for the next six months' power and gas on a fixed price tariff, followed by market rates for the remainder of the fix. This means that there are really no great fixed price deals available out there. Getting off SVT towards the end of summer is probably a good idea, especially if energy companies start to offer tariffs that are cheaper than SVT over winter - the window for setting the winter price cap just opened at the start of February, so right now it's looking like the cap is going to end up being even higher than this summer's. But what do I know? I was confidently predicting in September that this was all a storm in a teacup and the market would settle down by February.

Anyone use Smarty SIM? I know it runs on Three network which I have had almost zero problems with since 2013. There's some really good deals on there at the moment. (£4 for unlmited calls texts and 12GB data for £4 going up to £8 after 3 months.) But I'm paying £18.50 for 40GB mifi on Three - I don't use more than about 3GB a month on it and I think the most ever is 7GB). I haven't dared try to change it because my home broadband is also with them for which they're currently crediting my account £16pm instead of charging me £22pm (am putting that aside in a separate savings account against the day they realize) but I just know if I try and sort it out they'll fk it up and I'll have no internet so I thought I'll get backup internet in first! I need tethering because if I'm on my laptop and the Homehub has a wobbly while I'm working I can just switch over internet and carry on. (And funnily enough if Three homehub has a wobbly - rare but has occasionally happened, the Three mifi is almost always able to connect). My other alternative is to sign up to BT Wifi at £15pm for an annual subscription (and also apparently works abroad). (If / when mum gets her own place again, she'll almost certainly sign up to BT so I'd be able to use her BT Wifi signon).

yeah I've got a smarty sim. had it for I dunno ... poo poo 18 months. tenner a month for 30gb, never used more than 5gb weirdly this month I have 60gb as a freebie upgrade, i have no idea if thats just this month or forever more? I also used it in france over xmas where it was dubious whether I had the same usage as in the Uk. Smarty said i did, but 3 said it would stop at 12gb. Didnt get near needing it so no idea. I've noticed that it blocks porn and stuff though. I've supposedly clicked the button that says dont do that but it still seems to. dunno how to sort that.

TBH the majority of snack foods here in Canada are just trash. Chocolate bars are all just some variation of chocolate and nuts and/or caramel. Sweets are all just overly sweet sugared bullshit. Crisps are all just cheese and/or jalapeno/spicy flavour. I mean it's exaggerating a bit, but in comparison to British snack foods it's not far off. In the UK you get a much wider variety of crisp flavours and types, plus all kinds of nice biscuits (you do get some of the same stuff here, but instead of a lot of the more interesting stuff you get a million varieties of "cookie"). Same for crisps actually - they have a few interesting flavours like Dill Pickle (actually quite good) and "All-dressed" which I've mentioned ITT before - they literally have several different flavourings added: "ketchup, salt, vinegar, barbecue, sour cream, onion and other mystery seasonings" - my taste buds tell me they have paprika in too. They're alright, fairly unique... but again instead of some of the really interesting flavours of stuff you get in the UK you get 20 different varieties/shapes/thicknesses (yes really) of salted tortilla chips and a whole shitload of cheese and bullshit flavour crisps. I remember when Walkers Sweet Chilli Sensations came out in the UK, I think what was their first foray into like, "unusual", international flavours, and then the floodgates opened for all sorts of other interesting stuff... I just think that never happened here. I have found some sweet thai chilli flavour things but they're like corn or rice chips or something - some baked thing - not really satisfying. I have had some luck with going to the Chinese supermarket here - including Lime flavour, Cucumber flavour (actually kind of like a good but weird spicy flavour that also tastes of cucumber), "Numb and Spicy Hotpot" flavour which is like szichuan chilli and is *amazing*, and other weird stuff like salted egg yolk flavour crisps. Also there are Indian populations wherever you go in Canada and I shop at the cheap supermarkets where lots of other immigrants (like me) shop, and so I can get some of the awesome kinds of Indian crisp-like snacks which is good. I'm yet to find a good Bombay Mix which matches what I used to get in the UK though. I like crisps.

Last summer, during my “cheat week” where I break from my diet and basically gorge myself, I got quite into making kettle corn. It’s very easy to make, though a bit tiring - you basically heat oil in a big pot and then add a bunch of kernels along with sugar straight into the oil. Then you have to physically shake the pot over the heat for however long it takes for all the corn to pop. This results in the sugar caramelising on the popcorn, but tastes quite different from the toffee popcorn you can buy in shops. A lovely burnt sugar taste. I recommend it!
