Maybe so, but without a legitimate head of state they're not going to be able to pretend like the post-war government isn't a puppet. I don't think the Russians are interested in regime change after seeing how often it's failed for the Americans.

Or they watched out good NATO partner Erdogan go nuts in Syria and went, "hold my bear." Hard to say at this point. Best case they set Zelensky down and make him sign a piece of paper to then mostly gently caress off again with deaths in the low thousands. Kind of like Georgia. But there's a lot of ways this can get worse.

I kind of doubt that Zelensky is going to be kept around as president at this point at least in the long-term. You don’t make a drive into a capital to obtain a ceasefire.

Ramzan Kadyrov's dad was appointed by Putin to head the Chechen republic after the war, and was assassinated for it. Ramzan commanded his father's militia and the Russians picked him to head the government as his successor. The Kadyrovtsy have been fighting in every anti-Jihadist war in the caucasus, and Syria.

I mean, Turkey really doesn't want to break the Montreaux Convention. Under Montreaux they have a lot of leeway over who gets to use the Bosporos (no US Vessels are allowed, for one) but if they decide to breach their obligations, their control over the Bosporus reverts to UNCLOS, and the Turks definitely don't want that.

But the fact remains that the overall history of the west is the spreading of democracy across the globe. And even with those exceptions, that is still true of the US. I assume you are aware of all the countries the US DID in fact install democracy in, it's a large number. An even larger number if you consider countries that didn't have democracy installed but instead guided and encouraged to do so.

I'm something of a loving idiot myself.

as much as everyone wants to repeat that international law is essentially meaningless and doesn't exist, all states have a vested interest in pretending it does. As Marx said (and Miéville expanded) between equal rights force decides, but you still need to have equal rights.

speaking of Mieville, I can definitely recommend his monograph on a Marxist Theory of International law. It turns the extreme cynicism and mystified ideology of international realism on its head by focussing on the material basis of power and force. Also a great way of learning about how the Soviets essentially designed a completely original and ideological legal system from scratch. Here's the libgen for those interested: http://libgen.rs/book/index.php?md5=805C23567871BFD1A1042985F576F7BC

How much of that footage is peace time stuff? The casualness is still weird to me. Like if there's active fighting and tanks are getting blown up and these tanks are taking up positions in the city you'd just drive around them? "loving tanks I gotta get to work!"

It'd be depressing as gently caress, but some of it might just be this thread and everyone else falling for Ukrainian internal propaganda about their own defense. Things might look casual and chill because Russia might be rolling through areas with little to no resistance, so the average person on the ground is seeing the hardware but not any fighting they need to worry about.

It would line up with a lot of the intense fighting being small pockets at specific locations rather than an organized line of defense, plus the rapid advance through the country despite a bunch of claims that Ukraine still has planes in the air. It sure seems like large convoys are just plowing through UA cities like they own the place.
