Dumb question apropos of nothing other than the “flight turned around lol” I suppose..

Are nations running expat/nationals repatriation flights from Russia right now? With the cut off of airspace to Russian flights is this a “go talk to your embassy” thing?

Yeah they definitely do although I suspect they may start to less the longer this goes on.

I guess also there are plenty of Russian Ukrainians plus they want to actually have the country forever once they capture it so are probably trying to damage as little as possible. The miscalculation so far is the Ukrainians being less keen on being 'liberated' than they expected perhaps.

Just for comparison, official Russian losses in First Chechen War was 5732 and that was 1,5 years
It has been 4 days of action here and it is already at 4300

airlifts are notorious for being extremely costly and prone to failure. the berlin airlift was only really possible due to a carve out in the wests post-war treaties with the USSR for a v narrow air lane between west germany and west berlin. Even then soviets buzzed them, harrassed them and did everything possible to get them to gently caress up and do an act of war accidentally

Only via sub-orbital spaceplanes. As others pointed out, lower flying craft are vulnerable to AA fire.

There's no good numbers for the Kadyrovtsy, there were maybe 5 to 7,000 when they formally disbanded and were integrated into the Chechen government when Kadyrov took over. But the casualties we are seeing are unlikely to make a significant dent outside of morale.

I’m not sure what Russias tolerance for casualties is but it may take a lot more killing before they give up.

In terms of 21st century wars, in the 20+ years the US was in Afghanistan, they lost around 2800 people, and about 4300 US personnel died in Iraq since 2003. A supposedly modern army losing that number of troops in less than a week is significant.

You can tell the numbers are inaccurate anyways, the TB-2 drone videos out of Ukraine so far show Russian forces losing:

2x Buk-M1-2 SAM system
1x Tor-M2 SAM system
4x 152mm 2A65 Msta-B howitzer
4x KamAZ-6350 8x8 artillery tractor
10x Unknown truck

Which are not reflected in the numbers!

UN Security Council emergency meeting stream is up. Should be starting soon. The last one was spicy and Russia is still presiding.

https://www.rferl.org/a/united-nations-russia-ukraine-security-council/31726020.html

The US and Albania called the meeting posted:

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet in an emergency session on February 27 to vote on whether to refer a resolution opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the General Assembly.

Russia on February 25 blocked the move with its veto in a Security Council vote.

Permanent members Russia, the United States, Britain, France, and China hold veto power in the Security Council.

But the February 27 vote would be a procedural action, meaning only nine of the 15 members must agree. No vetoes are allowed, making it likely to proceed to the General Assembly
