US Treasury just froze all assets of the Russian Central Bank and National Wealth Fund in pre-trading hours so they couldn't transfer them out. This basically means they have no way to guarantee depositors in the event of a bank run (which is already happening); the Russian banking industry will likely implode.

The UK and EU are also discussing how to begin seizing the assets of sanctioned individuals so they can't attempt to hide behind billions of dollars of real estate.

Pretty sure they were all banned after being told to gently caress off because no one in the fanbase gives a fuuuuuck about crypto.

Anyways to make this tangibly related to the thread topic, home opener was on Saturday and they had a moment of silence for Ukraine and there were a ton of Ukrainian flags and signs of support around the stadium. To my knowledge, no one on either team is from Ukraine, but even still, it was nice to see :unsmith:

I think its Sberbank and their European arm that is just flat out done right now, I don't know about the rest of the banks. Events just haven't caught up to reality, there's a cliff of transactions that just haven't happened and once they resolve everything falls apart. Inertia and gravity are still duking it out but gravity is inevitable.

Ukrainian navy posted:

Regarding the actions of the Russian Federation near the island of Snake

February 26, having received information that Fr. A snake among our defenders may be killed and wounded, a civilian ship Sapphire was sent to the island to carry out a humanitarian mission to help the victims. Fathers Vasyl Vyrozub, Oleksandr Chokov and their assistants agreed to leave together with the crew. But they were illegally captured by the Russians. The illegal seizure of a non-combatant civilian ship that did not carry out any military tasks is a violation of the rules and customs of war and international humanitarian law.

We demand from the Russian Federation immediate release of illegally captured citizens of Ukraine

We appeal to the world community, to the faithful of all churches with a request to take all possible measures to influence the Russian Federation for the return of our citizens.

As for the Marines and frontier guards captured by the Russian occupiers on Snake Island.

We are very happy to learn that our brothers are alive and well!

But Russian propaganda is trying to promote the "news" that the Ukrainian authorities have "forgotten" and "buried" their subordinates.

At the same time, the Marines bravely twice repulsed the attacks of the Russian occupiers. Due to the lack of BC, they were unable to continue defending the island.

In turn, the occupiers "forgot" to report that they had completely destroyed the island's infrastructure: lighthouses, towers, antennas, etc. Accordingly, communication with Zmiin was cut off. Repeated attempts to contact the staff and find out their fate were in vain. And the constant shelling by warships and aircraft of the Russian Federation did not allow to deliver aid to the Marines.

Summing up, we want to add that the enemy has once again demonstrated its essence. And again he proved that there is no faith and truth in his actions and words.

And we look forward to our brothers and sisters with all our hearts.

Has anyone else had the realization that if all of this was happening during Trump that we'd know the hourly thoughts of every member of the administration since the very beginning because none of them could stop tweeting or talking to reporters? And that even if by some miracle the Trump administration had done 100% the same actions that Biden has taken, the whole thing would be a million times more stressful and less likely to succeed as a result?

I still hate Biden, but JFC this crisis really illustrates why you need actual professionals in government and can't just put your son-in-law in charge.

The Trump White House would be in open support of Putin's actions regardless of whatever the rest of the world says/does. I'm sure Flynn would be involved in an official capacity.

I don't think the world's reactions would be as strong without the US response, either.

I feel like you can't even fault the experts for that assumption. I vividly recall the time in the pre-2000s when the ongoing joke was that Russia wouldn't even have fuel to let their nukes fly.

This was followed by 20 years of Russia moving towards the point where they had half of Europe in their pocket on energy-dependence alone and we're making stupid bank connected to those deals. Granted, Putins Regime is a big ol corruption-grift, but with the expansion and modernization of its military, there was a very believable explanation of where some of that money was going.

I always had Putin figured out as the type of autocrat that would have a good feel and instinct of which farts to huff and which bullshit reports from his sycophants to believe, because I kinda doubt he would have went down this road if he was fully aware of the absolutely desolate state of his armed forces that would make him lose face so goddamn hard.

I can only assume they corruptioned so comically hard that literally all of that good oil and gas money disappeared into pockets of every single officer on the way down the chain.

at this point the signs from sochi are so apparent putin should just run with it and deploy a brigade of sochi dogs

I am not posting footage because it has more than a few of what appear to be dead civilians, but it does look like general area shelling starting to take place in Kharkiv. Russian forces had previously appeared to be comparatively careful about shelling civilian infrastructure en masse vs select strikes like power plants. Unclear if this is a local commander or points toward a shift in accepted risk and strategy.

"Still, a tiny sliver of hope emerged as the first face-to-face talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials since the war began opened Monday. The delegations met at a long table with the blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flag on one side and the Russian tricolor on the other.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office said it would demand an immediate cease-fire and withdrawal of Russian troops.

But while Ukraine sent its defense minister and other top officials, the Russian delegation was led by Putin’s adviser on culture — an unlikely envoy for ending the war and a sign of how Moscow views the talks.

This article was from earlier. I have a hunch that sending your cultural advisor means you might not give a gently caress about how it goes
