While visiting a local garage I ran into some old Willys pickup.. thing? I dont know anything about them really but I thought you guys might. Maybe from the 50s? The guy was trying to get it inspected for road worthiness but they had some problems with stuck clutch. The thing had metal on the outside and wooden interior which I have never seen before.

Some kind of custom one off recovery vehicle? Setup looks similar to a tow truck from the 50s before everyone switched to that giant crucifix mechanism

Yeah its possible. Considering the colour I was thinking maybe some old firefighter truck, but then there were no markings that would indicate that.

Some of the hardware on the front reminds me of old snowplow mounts I've seen on old trucks. The blade is raised/lowered by the winch, and the winch can be used for recovery when the snowplow isn't mounted.

"Wankel"
And it's pronounced "Vahn-kel", just for reference, because German.

Hey! It doesn't need a taillight when its running. Neat.
He definitely needs a camera mount so he can drive with both hands. That thing is awesome.

That looks like a variation on the arctic cab Willys my neighbor had. His covered the entire Jeep, but was otherwise very similar. Aluminum outside, wood inside, insulation in between. If I'm not mistaken that contraption just barely seen under the passenger dash is a Kerosene heater that accompanies the cab.

The snowplow guess sounds reasonable in context.

Update - we have discovered that the front passenger side body mount bolt is broken. We're speculating that this was due to twisting forces.

At a guess, clearing runways, or even ice runways? Salt or grit spreader in the back?

That's a fuel tank. I found its sister truck which was a water wagon set up for a spray bar and a similar size plow. I'm guessing they were the first units out onto the ice roads every winter. Or possibly repairing them.

e: they appear to be support vehicles for arctic island drilling. they seem to be in Panarctic colors.

I don't think he's thought through the steering. He wanted to use the original steering box, like it was, but not sure how you would do that with the tilt body without some sort of disconnecting link that would be annoying. Then again, he may not plan to tilt it very often.

Sure, but they'd either be very long ones, or involve the aforementioned annoying disconnect.
He mentioned that he didn't want to go hydraulic simple because typical hydraulics would be too strong for what they actually need to do, which is to activate the brake bands on the tread drive, but I don't think that's really much of a problem. Small cylinders and/or lower pressure with positive stops would probably handle it. The DIY solution involving the factory Chevy steering box was pretty backwoods ingenious, but there are better ways.
I still want to see how he handles it though. That truck/tank is silly fun.

The 1959 El Camino is a thing of beauty. I saw one in the wild, I found the shelf that is created from the little fin at the bed corner to be a charming detail. The kind of car I'd want to ride in the back of on a float trip down the creek.

Chevy never built a '58 El Camino - this is a custom built from a wagon, which is even cooler. Dig the opening rear window.

That is one of the rare examples of customs that are indistinguishable from the reality of what OEs actually built. It’s just superbly done.

This pretty French-registered 992 (I think?) has been parked on the pavement in my UK town for a week. The thing that elevates it to awesome is that the back starts are taken up by a wicker picnic hamper. Not a super-rare spot, but I liked it.
