Now, Seattle has its own aspirant to Trump-style messaging: Nicole Thomas-Kennedy, the leftist candidate for city attorney. Horsey doesn't explicitly say he would prefer a Republican to her, but it's pretty strongly implied by how he talks about her. There is, however, this "classic" Horsey where he laments that there aren't any Republicans running for Seattle's city council: quote:In this year’s upcoming municipal elections, one of the key races is for Seattle City Council Position 9. The three leading contenders for that at-large council seat are Nikkita Oliver, a community organizer and political activist, Brianna Thomas, chief of staff to the current council president, and Sara Nelson, co-owner of Fremont Brewing.

It's an interesting thing about this cartoon that at no point does McFadden consider the plight of the Ukrainian people. Only bad takes by a nebulously-defined media and how America is involved, both issues being portrayed in a typically reductionist manner. And while frankly I agree with them that there's been many ghoulish and stupid takes on the war I do raise an eyebrow at the lack of consideration for why this war is happening in the first place. To judge by the narrative presented in this cartoon, you would think American troops are pouring into somewhere to fight somebody and nuclear war is a positive certainty. I found another couple cartoons from the same time with similar rants, but then the Seattle Times paywalled me for having looked at two articles and I cannot be bothered to circumvent it. Short version, he really hates his local city council and their refusal to recognize that the homeless are animals who can't be contained through social services and that only cops can deal with them.

I am likely to let folks cast votes for all three rounds throughout the voting period, but that would mean you had to read all 360 entries in one sitting. Do you really want to do that?

How would you do that while maintaining both the joke and the message? This is a comic about warhawks, it's not like adding nuance helps it. Would you also like them to include an explanation that NATO countries getting more directly involved would guarantee a nuclear exchange?

It's really just a reimagining of the old "stopped clock" metaphor. Rall's points are the opposite, in that his views are broadly from the same place as yours, but he makes his points so poorly that you get the urge to disagree on principle. In the clock metaphor he's more of one that's 15 minutes off, which means that he will never be correct, not even twice a day, but he'll consistently be adjacent to being correct.

OK so is surrogacy a right wing culture war thing I’m just not aware of? This is a particularly weird take even for Ishida: https://twitter.com/bitterkarella/status/1501606259132227588?s=21 My best guess is that conservatives noticed that surrogacy let’s gay people have kids so it must be bad by default.

Rall's problem isn't that he's wrong about things. Like the one where he drew Biden saying the US wouldn't tolerate a country invading another one on false pretenses and then it shows Obama/Bush/Trump in prison. He is absolutely 100% correct about the US being wrong on invading Iraq and Afghanistan, and that Bush, Trump and Obama should be in prison for war crimes. The problem is that he's using it to distract and deflect from Russia invading Ukraine, because he can't say "Russia is bad" due to getting paid by Russia. And he's still doing it, I guess because he hopes they'll hire him back at some point. It's not that Ted Rall is wrong, he's just more concerned with getting sick burns in on the US because he wants to prove he was right all along about how Iraq and Afghanistan were bad, to show all those Hitlers how great and smart he is. So he's incapable of saying another country is doing something wrong, especially if everybody already agrees that a country is doing something wrong, because everyone agrees with him so he's not special. Better instead to say "Oh yeah well what about when I was right about this OTHER thing huh? Praise me, Ted Rall, for being right!" readingatwork posted:My best guess is that conservatives noticed that surrogacy let’s gay people have kids so it must be bad by default. Conservatives are against gay people adopting kids and want to make it illegal for them to do so, but I don't think I've actually heard any of them talk about surrogate parenting. I assume they don't think it's an issue, because in their minds liberals would rather abort babies than have babies so they don't think liberals are doing it, which would mean only good conservative people who wouldn't be gay are doing it, so why would it be an issue? It may be a thing where it's purely an Ishida point of view, like he knows liberals don't just love aborting babies or whatever and thus he's outside of that specific part of the right wing mindset, but like you said he goes "But wait, that means it would allow gay/trans people to have kids! That can't be good!" Kind of like how the right wing media was all "We're saying the vaccine and masks are bad because of science, science is good it's just liberals are misusing it," and Ishida just went "The vaccine and masks are bad because science is bad." It wasn't a mainstream right wing opinion, it was just Ishida's own weird opinion.
