You know, it's largely and unequivocally a good thing that we've gotten more sensitive about our stories and more aware of modern sensibilities, media history proves all too strongly that when we don't things can easily get racist, sexist, what have you, and Prince Valiant itself is, generally speaking, better than its contemporaries; at the same time I feel like you really wouldn't get away with Boltar and that last panel today.

I wonder if we'll see some sort of sterilization of antiheroes once the comics code era (1954-) rolls in.

Giant Days x Batman

John Allison's Patreon John Allison's Gumroad store
Forward Slash Scare website for Allison's side comics

John Allison posted:

McGraw! He’ll show Esther what to do. I’m always slightly ill at ease drawing McGraw because he’s not a character I really brought to life on the page. Beyond a couple of sketches I did before the Boom series started, Lissa Treiman and Max Sarin made him the man he is.

Esther is wearing what I would describe as a bolero jacket with integral half-cape. It caused me problems every time I drew it so enjoy it in all its majesty, secure in the knowledge that the second Esther can throw it off, she will.

So here we see the last two members of the Giant Days regular cast, Ed Gemmel and Graham McGraw. Ed debuted in the first Giant Days webcomic (before the series was picked up by Boom!) and developed a crush on Esther. Ed's character arc through-out the series is getting over said crush. As Allison mentioned McGraw debuted in the first Boom! issue, when the comic was being drawn by other artists. He is an old friend of Susan's and during the series they have an on-and-off relationship. McGraw is also somewhat old-fashioned and has a great amount of skill when it comes to any form of construction/tools, so it makes sense that despite being the most level-headed member of the cast he would be obsessed with Batman's utility belt.

Also, in issue 28, we Daisy calling him on "The McGraw-Phone"

It does feel like Messick ran out of ideas for how to end the Dr. Slimsky story and went, "Okay, I'll just have him murdered by a circus fat lady."

I also like that the first two strips are three panels about a gruesome, remorseless murder... and one panel of Abretha happily cooking for her boyfriend.
