Even with a poppy chorus Boy Harsher is the darkwave/ebm equivalent of edging with no finish. It's a good sound but it never goes anywhere.

Key just posted an update to social media essentially confirming some suspicions in the fan base that they are most definitely NOT playing those European festival dates (Hellfest and Sinnerfest). He does leave it on a somewhat positive note, as I fully expected it to end with a "thanks for the memories, we're out" statement.

He does use the phrase 'final shows' so it sounds they're done after whatever they end up doing in 2023. Massive mega-bummer in my book, but I guess maybe doing something like Skinny Puppy starts to make less sense when you're almost 60.... Though it does kinda freak me out nonetheless, because a lot of artists I enjoy are getting to be about that old....

Yeah. I always assumed we might get ONE more farewell tour from those two and then they would call it a day. Key will continue to churn out bleepity bloops and Ogilvie probably has one more album with Walk in him maybe? I don't know. As you mentioned, Ogre turns 60 in December and those live tours take a toll on the body for sure.

I caught Plack Blague live the other day (they were supporting Adult., along with Red Meat) and they put on a great live show. Ignoring the two year pandemic gap, they're one of the most fun scene live acts I've seen in a fair while. Wasn't exactly a busy show, but just absolutely killed it, so fun. If you really don't want to see a dude's butt though, YMMV on that because There Will Be Butt

They opened for NIN and David Bowie which is a bit of a poo poo gig because you're guaranteed to look like poo poo compared to that lineup. They made another album but it was mailorder only. Maybe they got dropped by the label. A lot of bands that were on Nothing seemed to have not really gone anywhere. I remember someone saying that if you weren't NIN or Marilyn Manson you weren't a priority for the record company.

They weren’t dropped exactly but were unable to secure a release date for the next album, so there was a legal dispute that ended up with Prickster having the songs but no label to release them on, so that’s why he went mail order with the next one. I also always thought that Animal was a pretty sick song but it maybe didn’t need the bit where he eats out(?) the woman(??) backed by Quake grunts edit: like I listen to lots of extreme stuff and I get it, but this is a very fun, catchy song… until you hear the sounds of someone slurping(?) an ogress(???) It was one of the first Puppy albums I truly got into back in High School. I had already drifted out of a comfort zone of Depeche Mode, The Smiths, New Order, and the Cure into things like Ministry's Land of Rape and Honey and Mind ... when a buddy from Journalism class let me borrow that record. It was so drat dense, but "Worlock" melted my seventeen year old brain. I'll always have a special place for it. "Rivers" and "Choralone" are top tier deep cuts. The Voice of Labor posted:it's going up against devo's automodown for lyrical subject matter which is an uphill battle Rabies may be the last time they got really specific in terms of poltics? I tend to think of industrial as being inherently political music. "the fool does everything backwards so that, by juxtaposition, what is lasting and objective is revealed in contrast with what is subjective, indifferent and ephemeral" that p' much seems to describe throbbing gristle's musical transgressions, einstürzende neubauten's musical deconstruction, the not always ironic obsession with fascism in the genre, and sharkbait's dr. demento grade lyrics over scrapyard poundings. can't say I really pay close attention the lyrics on the post goettel/ogilvie puppy albums, but I would imagine an album titled the greater wrong of the right has some political content. the video for criminal age certainly does

I was only being half sarcastic. I absolutely pay attention to lyrical content, especially for bands I adore like Puppy. Post Goettel, it gets even more abstract but he still pulls out some good lines.

Yeah the latest Ministry album got some negative reviews from people for being political in a way they didn't like. I don't think these people were very perceptive if they thought Al was on their side this whole time. Imagine that, the guy that wrote a trilogy of albums to poo poo on GWB is left-wing, who knew?

I feel like most of the 00s and 10s, artists that formed part of or were popular in the euro goth/industrial scene were generally thoroughly disengaged with political themes other than a broad and non-specific "gently caress the government!" or "gently caress the establishment!" slogan shouted from the stage occasionally by someone with a comfortable IT job wearing tactical gear. There were a few notable exceptions but mostly it came down to some occasional fist in the air slogans that were often fairly non-specific. Like, in interviews artists would say "oh yeah our music is super political" or talk about their own political engagement but it wasn't borne out in the imagery, lyrics or much else. And then the artists and fans getting older has probably just increased that rightward drift. I think there was a comfortable and deliberately false 'industrial as a genre is anti-establishment and left wing' thing carried forward from the very early days which artists who weren't either of those were happy to wrap around themselves as they made aggrotech tracks glorifying war and celebrating misogyny. Feel like it's changing now with younger and more diverse artists and fans engaged with the scene and more overtly political artists and labels over the last five or so years, as well as less tolerance for artists/fans with lovely views from those who don't hold those views themselves. Obviously, I'm not saying all industrial music should be political, or that modern industrial as a genre is a radical act in itself - but it's nice to see that aspect in resurgence as a part of the genre particularly given all that's going on in the world. Edit: for me, the point where I realised I wanted this in the scene was when I thought about some of the more dubious neofolk/martial industrial artists that were or had been around scene events, the scene names who had either knowingly or unknowingly had links to the far right or shared their ideologies and the general complete lack of open anti-fascist sentiments during the 00s and early 10s. In the main, the only anti-fascist sentiment you'd hear was from Die Krupps, basically. If the far right are encroaching and no one in your scene is saying anything, then your scene has a problem. Different now to a degree, thankfully. Danger - Octopus! fucked around with this message at 12:52 on Mar 14, 2022 |

To avoid confusion, I would simply write "Don't be blind. This is not a pro-Faschist project" on the back of my aggrotech album that heavily borrows fascist imagery and lyrics, with absolutely no meaningful commentary.
