people talk as if the show had any kind of badly mishandled themes and wasn't just written by a guy who said in interviews he has no idea how to write sci-fi and was just winging it without really thinking about what he was making at any point

Are you trying to tell me there wasn't some deep meaning or social commentary involved in the pilots needing to be in a doggy position to run the mechs? Next you're going to say the slime that dissolved nothing except clothing was gratuitous fanservice.

only things I remember about franxx:

-some character drama people got mad about that almost sounded interesting enough for me to try the show but was immediately forgotten in the next ep
-speculation that a character was gay that got strongly dismissed that turned out to be correct but said character was also the sole one condemned to waste away alone from plot disease

The best thing about Darling in the Franxx was that a v. angry fanfic become a NYT bestseller called the Iron Widow, and it is p. sweet.

Franxx became a strong "people should be happy (in hetreo relationships as God intended) and should pursue interests (that benefit the state and result in more children)" statement.

Their utopia also works by a clumsy rape of the planet/abuse of unknown organisms trope that sucks as well because those elder organisms turn into weapons and are bad for it

Hell, for winging it they did okay. Ever so slightly improves my opinion of it.

Xiran Jay Zhao's debut novel, Iron Widow, is a re-imagining of the history of Wu Zetian, empress of China during the late 600s. In an interview with Publishers Weekly, they stated that "there's no other woman in Chinese history who had a rise through the harem as iconic as hers... It's been incredibly fun to reimagine her as instead a teenage peasant girl in an intensely misogynistic world who suddenly gains access to giant fighter mechas—how would she change her world?"

Franxx in general was very good until the plots turning point at ep 16 or so and it was quite amusing that the show about mech pilots doggystyling each other turned out to actually be fairly wholesome and non-horny.

Also, Zero Two was cool in a way not a lot of female anime characters are allowed to be.

Even though I liked it a lot, it's ok to me if you don't like Franxx. I understand most of the common thoughts against it even if I don't agree so much.

But if you don't think Zero Two is cool then I'm afraid there cannot be peace between us.

franxx was a messy show but wonder egg was a more maddening production disaster that wasted the talents of staff who've only just last season gotten something good to make up for it that let them show their abilities without being hamstrung by an incompetent writer who both failed to deliver scripts on time or work with the staff to plan ahead so they could schedule their work better so i don't think it's much of a contest. you can say something has a bad script but it's hard to say that's worse than having a script that sent its staff to the hospital

The first half of wegg was better than the first half of franxx, but the second half of wegg was worst than the second half of franxx

By half I really mean pre and post plot-derailment point.

So wegg was way more disappointing but only because expectations were higher.

I wouldn't recommend either show, but I'd recommend franxx over wegg. Wegg mishandles some heavy themes very badly. Franxx is just dumb.

And aside from that, just as a show alone Wonder Egg finale kinda of betrayed it's themes in a way that was insulting to the audience that got invested in the original premises whereas while Franxx was messy it stayed mostly true to it's themes throughout (I just hated the themes)

Do you mean Shadows House? Shadows House had a good original story and Clover did just fine with it. The second season is coming in the Summer and it'll probably be good too, since the manga was.

I like sirens for sequels because they let me know that there IS a sequel to a show at all. I use this thread exclusively to know what is on each season.

second half's a bit clunkier since it goes more full plot and some of the more dreamworldy eps are a bit less weird and psychedelic and more just like wacky mech otaku parody adventure, but it doesn't really get bad at all it's still a pretty fun magical girl yuri anime that still manages some really impressive animation in between some of the more limited stuff mostly just thanks to its director being a complete powerhouse.

people do like to do some weird talk about it getting bad because the person in charge of series composition left midway through but, from what she's said it wasn't on bad terms and she was pleased with the direction the show ultimately took, stuff just kinda happened. there was never a big plan that got aborted or anything from the very start the nature of the show was just a bunch of animators making something they thought would be cool and they decided, a magical girl yuri anime with psychedelic action and dream adventure stuff would be cool
