When it comes to tofu this is 100% the case here in Sweden. When tofu was first introduced as a consumer product it was marketed as a healthy meat substitute with stuff like tofu hotdogs and poo poo. So it’s not surprising that Swedes initially saw tofu as a flavorless alternative to meat. It was reserved for the hippies of health nuts.

But slowly it turned into an actual ingredient (very much helped by a company started in 1998 by a Chinese family that produces most Swedish tofu today). Now can find pretty good tofu in any larger supermarket and in a surprising amount of smaller towns and shops.

And as an ignorant Swede I’m curious if you could walk into a grocery store in a US town of 10-20k residents and expect to find tofu.

I live in a town smaller than that and all of the chain grocery stores in town have tofu, stuff like that isn't hard to find or anything. There's not much variety, it's just blocks of firm or extra firm from a couple of different brands iirc, but still

i grew up in a small town of 5k people in maine and in the early 2000s they had tofu in the supermarket, if not earlier. that’s just when i remember trying it for the first time.

it was some hippies my parents knew, they asked me if i wanted to try tofu and i said sure, so the guy took a piece of unseasoned tofu out of the fridge, put it on a plate with nothing else, and served it to me lol. i thought i didn’t like tofu until years later when i had it actually cooked

US actually exports a lot of agricultural products because we've made it very legal and very cool to drill a well half a mile into the earth to suck out the ten million year aquifer water for short term profit

but uh between that stuff and repeated fertilizer overuse turning the soil into dust that'll only be good for another 20 years at most, probably better to diversify now

True, but we saw what happened when large importers like China were "sanctioned" by large taxes and they just imported soy beans from iirc Brazil instead.

tofu comes in more varieties than the plain white blocks of varying firmness sold in liquid tubs

- 腐竹 yuba r dry sticks that need to be soaked prior to cooking. it can even be cooked with oil tofu so u get to taste the different textures
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQvPx0oL_EM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm1MEyl1Z-o

- 豆干 / 烟熏香干 dried tofu, some are pre-spiced, some are lightly smoked, easy to cut up without having to to press it to remove the liquid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Udrnm-kaU4s

- 干豆腐 tofu sheets r dry tofu that can be cut up into thin strips like noodles and tossed cold or cut into broader strips to stir fry with veggies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVzngDxh06E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lweKw8sL1f8

- 腐皮 an even thinner form of tofu sheets can be used to make spring rolls (腐皮卷)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDM7Jm9rlIM

- 日本豆腐 / 蛋豆腐 japanese tofu/egg tofu r usually sold in cylindrical tubes, best when deep fried and lathered in sauces
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsY0293B8_s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vz_3RAFJ38

- 油豆腐 / 豆腐泡 oil tofu which is puffy pre-fried tofu thats good when stuffed with fish paste or regular ground meat and veggies or just eaten alone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzCt_cDrizw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AqNEuzbDq0

some of the vids dont have auto-translate english but u can just grok it if you've been cooking long enough

im just covering the more palatable varieties and not touching stuff like hairy tofu (hair = mold) and stinky tofu which i doubt you'd find outside china

I have followed this China youtubers for a long time and he has been saying for at least the last 2 years that when unification happens (if it happen with force), the US won't send in the war ships but instead use all their financial toolkits to start a finance war. I am basically going from 80% agreed with him to 100%, and also glad that the US has used almost all of the financial nuclear weapons on the Russians (both the government and the people) as a demo run for the world to see.

it does seem more likely than launching a direct attack/defense of Taiwan from where we were at the beginning of the year, but isn’t the world watching the failure of that financial toolkit to bring about any meaningful (to the US) result? Russia, India, and China are are making very showy moves to get away from SWIFT and the petrodollar with what looks like the cooperation of Saudi Arabia. should we assume they won’t reevaluate their strategy at all in the interim? I suppose I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re that blind, but I wouldn’t bet on it

lol on that note, a hypothetical Taiwan province within the PRC would be as rowdy and irritating to the rest of the country as Florida, Texas, and California combined are to the U.S. Can just imagine it trying to build relations with the other S.A.R.'s and kicking up a ruckus. Guess it's a good thing that China doesn't do federalism.

I think the current financial analytic tools are only good at evaluate the economic condition of developed western countries (that are ruled by the financial elites and the country's assets have been sufficiently monetized). When this war is done, you can still cherry pick some financial tools to calculate Russia has lost tens of trillions dollars in value and on the road to permanent decline. And a sanctioned China certainly will meet the same fate but 10 tines worse.

Putin's a spy man. He doesn't look at monetary value , he looks at how much resource is in disposal of the state and how many kilometer of sphere of influence the state extend outside of the Russia border.

The Japanese HSR project got mired in a bunch of issues in India. Some old: Like farmers not being willing to part with their land for building railways, While others were new: The BJP led state governments in Maharashtra and Gujarat doing so and then the BJP lost power because holy poo poo the BJP's lackeys are stealing our land.
