Saw The Darkness last night. It was silly, good fun and it was great just to see live music again. Justin Hawkins is a good frontman. Dragonforce was also playing a couple of blocks away.

If anyone shows I'm the dude in the Summoning shirt with the girl in the Chevalier shirt. Also, the new Hällas album is getting talked up on a lot of metal sites. I can confirm it's fantastic and possibly my AOTY so far. It's incredible.

I swear, Andy Sneap production has to be the most generic in metal. Seems like every band produced by him has the exact same sound across albums. It's mainly the dry as gently caress snare that gets me.

Okay I'll back this up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLz6DqLkFA8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPEwS2IhK1Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IunnJdDTY-w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rggQNCS8UjM All of these were produced or mixed by Sneap and they all have this full mix where the snare sounds very dry and the different instruments are leveled very similarly. All similar loudness and EQ too. It's like it's just the generic metal mixing now. Like I'm not complaining that you can hear everything too well or anything, but it's just so... run of the mill. And by dry snare, I mean snare with little echo or body. I guess it's a subjective thing. Edit: Also as an aside, this track feels like something you would write after binging on the back half of The Wall and wanted to cut a track with your best Roger Waters impression. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-Y9RTcPHZo Vargatron fucked around with this message at 15:17 on Apr 14, 2022 |

I like my mixes to have bass drums, crashes and hi-hats all set to 11. Bonus points toms that thud way louder than they should.

All those mixes up there sound incredibly palatable. I can’t make them better with more volume and that’s a problem.

I've found a few good'uns like GAUPA and Devil Electric, but they're more on the stoner rock side I guess? Genres are weird. Acid King Messa Witch Mountain Big Brave Jex Thoth MMWB (Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard) Feels like doom is one of the metal subgenres where you’re most likely to come across female lead vocalists.
