I read all of it the other day and it was ftw. I think the way the manga is laid out and the pacing is actually a little better than the anime but obviously the action scenes are about a billion times better in the show.

I went and started watching Odd Taxi because I was interested in a spoiler I saw and :tviv:

The show's conceit is executed so well that even vaguely knowing the spoiler it still completely got me by surprise! :aaa:

yeah, fr. it never feels like it's too mean to the characters, or that it's a misery porn or something. can be even funny (albeit in a very specific way)

im watching lain for the first time and instantly my first thought is this is one of those weird late 90s things where some boomer heard 5th hand what the internet is like and made a horror story out of it. but I appreciate all the audio sounding like it came out of Prince of darkness.

the thing about SEL is that it's hard to remember what the internet of the time was like, compared to what it's like now - which informs a lot of the story.

yeah, there's going to be a lot that you simply won't have a frame of reference to understand without looking outside of the text

this shouldn't be too hard, there's plenty of works that seek to explain the series, because even if you have the frame of reference to understand, it's buck loving wild at times with symbology that can be obtuse and/or obscure at best

well i can tell you from the last hour or so that the real solution is to keep getting bored with it and putting my dress up darling back on which is much more meaningful to my burned out zoomer brain. it doesn't help that I'm laying in bed and I'm too tired to really think about anything.

that's fair, it can be a lot of effort to put into a series, especially if you've been hyped up on it - because hype basically ruins everything, and SEL especially is the sort of series that's best when you discover it on its own

i'm gonna need the manga for sono bisque doll wa koi wo suru to finish so i can read it, because it's extremely the kind of romance series i want to read based on everything i've heard about it

i got into the manga because i liked the first couple dub episodes so much. it's pretty good but i just hope it doesn't suffer from the typical shoujo pacing problems.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Lain and a number of works from that era reflect an angst at the time that the internet would become this utopian parallel reality that people will disappear off into and thus neglect the real world. Whereas these days being too online means you are too plugged into what is happening, and people disconnect to escape the bullshit.

What's always puzzled me is how the creator of Lain went "oh I expected only Japanese people to be able to understand this work, but disappointingly reactions were pretty much the same across the world", which was ???

lol. anyway being too online today means the same thing it's just that instead of playing world of warcraft you play Twitter and it's equally detached from reality but everyone pretends it's reality. which in a way is worse than being a classic type nerd ever was. anyway ill probably get around to lain eventually because it's pretty but i totally don't get it. ghost in the shell is more my speed when it comes to depressing computer stuff from the 90s.

I mean I don't think Lain is that good a show really. It leads you on with the promise of a complicated mystery but eventually the mystery is explained and it's a big infodump and it's kinda dumb. It's basically anime Lost.

I like the OP and the designs of the backgrounds.

konaka's a weird guy. though it's funny people tried to cancel him for the digimon tamers stage play being kinda stupid and he was dramatically like "english readers: my response will be out soon" and then the response was just him going "yeah i agree it was stupid. i was in a mood when i wrote it and when i realized it sucked later they wouldn't let me rewrite it"

also worth noting that konaka is like. a huge conspiracy head. he doesn't buy into all of them but he really, really likes reading about them and a lot of that is what informs lain. it's also why one of the supporting characters in digimon tamers is a dumb self-absorbed cool sunglasses fbi man who grows into a cool guy who believes in the children

I don't see what's ??? about that quote. He expected, and wanted, people around the world to interpret the show in different ways--maybe he thought the foreign internet was different enough from the Japanese internet that people participating in the former would receive something other than the "intended" message. This didn't happen; everyone interpreted the show the same way, denying him the variety of interpretations he hoped for.

That's my interpretation based on the quote as you've written it here; I haven't seen the original
