Dick Trauma posted:The joy of pet names. I’m still very disappointed that my vet in Tennessee refused to use the Tomcat that adopted me’s given name of “Shitbag”. When I took him in to get tutored, I had to g give him a different name. He liked to intimidate the other semi ferals that also lived on my patio even though he probably would have had no clue that there was some sympathetic idiot providing good food and shelter in the area without following them. It was a well-earned name. When I picked him up after his neuter, the vet tech was like,”oh. Him. The Satan.” He stopped screaming at staff every time they got near as soon as he heard my voice though.

I went to get beer at my distributor today and I stopped at their little bar they have to grab a growler. Their shop dog stopped over to say hi. He was polite enough to remind me that I stopped petting him as well by poking me in the leg while I was checking out. Also the beer is good. Edit: action shot in case someone thought I didn’t pet that dog.

Look at these ridiculously photogenic girls. We have so many birds and butterflies now and it's nice out, so many of our brood are basically living on the catio during the day.

I think elephants might be the animal whose growth is most similar to humans when it comes to the awkward -> distinguished transition over the years. Those majestic beasts start off as some real goobers.

Ror posted:I think elephants might be the animal whose growth is most similar to humans when it comes to the awkward -> distinguished transition over the years. Those majestic beasts start off as some real goobers. From what I understand, the reason why human babies are so clumsy and awkward is that the baby's head is too drat huge because of our big brains, so everything else has to be delayed until later in the child's development. There just isn't enough space in the mother's womb to allow the child to develop further. It might be a similar thing with elephants? Meanwhile, baby horses start running almost immediately after birth and remain pretty dumb most of their lives (when it comes to things that aren't eating grass and running). Unrelated:

It's amazing that dogs have that 'this 2D image represents a 3D world' thing humans have. I don't think that's, cognitively, a given for all animals. He knew exactly where the ball would have gone, the good boy.

I saw a wallaby at a petting zoo yesterday, and while I didn't take pictures, I can tell you it was very cute. There was also a tortoise and a mini-cow.
