There are a bunch of papers on PLA reforms since the 91 Gulf War, but I guess people would rather believe the Human Wave myth (not that that’s what happened in Korea anyway). I don’t get it, since the Chinese are pretty eager to demonstrate their reforms, it’s easier to get a sense of their changes than the AFRF. Someone even made an operational study placing the PLA of 1991 in the position of the Coalition for Desert Storm, and then the PLA of today. I believe they released a scenario for The Operational Art of War based on their work. You know, this was a military that still had the SKS in frontline service well into the 70’s. To go from that to fielding a modern bullpup rifle, and whole family of associated arms, in a span of iirc a decade in time for the handover of Hong Kong should really attract notice. I mean, think of just how long it took the British to develop the L85, how much trouble they had with it, issues in fielding it, and even now they’re still tinkering with the SA80. Even the intricacies of the Chinese intermediate cartridge show a lot of innovation and a drive to modernize. I know small arms don’t amount to much, it’s more that developing a cartridge, a bullpup rifle of lightweight construction, and then equipping a million man army with it, demonstrates able planning, organization, and a overcoming a tremendous challenge for industry and logistics. I realize that the Goon Assessment™️ of the PLA is ideological, but if you consider that at the heart of all military operations is logistics, you can’t see how The Workshop of the World is formidable? In the past decade they built two aircraft carriers, where they had no history or experience with them whatsoever, have produced new Nuclear Attack and Ballistic Missile Submarines that are supposed to be quite good, new helicopters, new fixed wing aircraft of every sort, radars, and on and on. In artillery, they have parallel production of 122mm and 152mm guns for domestic use and 105mm and 155mm guns for export, which can only be seen as impressive as most nations can’t build guns of any sort. They have towed, wheeled and tracked guns in production, again showing an industrial capacity nobody else has. Canada has no gun foundry, China is building like 8 different artillery systems in parallel. I don’t think they’ll be the ones relying on manpower to offset a material disadvantage. You can’t just shrug this off and say they’ll use Human Waves, because it completely ignores the reality that the Arsenal of Democracy spent the past 40 years de industrializing and shipping all of that factory (machine?) space to China. We don’t have locomotive factories in Montreal that can start building Valentine tanks (now LAVs) or shipyards that can lay down frigates in a crash program anymore, it’s insane to think that we’d have a material, and therefore military, advantage.
