So I did a 7/7/7/7 run with a modified save file and hoooo boy are there a lot of things I somehow missed on my previous 6 or whatever playthroughs. Yelling 'MONEY' at Joyce with a high enough physical instrument and having her yell back was a good one, as was throwing away the letter in the case file with a high enough shivers before reading it

Also it occurs to me now that The Expression is the logical conclusion of the old mom's saying "If you don't stop making that face it will get stuck like that."

My favorite was the first Mass Effect game with its Renegade vs Good guy mechanic where you were given the choice to do exactly one thing but you could be an rear end about it.

designers are better nowadays but for a long time the default was something like

choice a) piss faction/party member x off
choice b) piss faction/party member y off
stat/quest-locked choice c) grind or level enough to make everyone happy

which is a problem when removing choice C makes it - objectively - a much more interesting choice to make

Blade Runner did ethical choice / multiple endings incredibly well, and I’m always confused as to why nobody else has figured out the simple combination of player agency + randomised starting conditions to generate a replayable game with interesting choices.

extremely good example, I'm very disappointed in myself for forgetting it.

i think the answer is that it's bad business to make "replayable" games, because most players won't finish it even once. the average is thrown off by doc "alpha protocol" hawkins who lives in a cave and has played through it three times straight and is thinking about what he'd do in a fourth.

Also, either cheat the game to make combat fun, or just max pistols and martial arts because all other combat options are trash.

Sure, maybe blowing up a door in the embassy and blasting away with a shotgun isn't the optimal choice but it should at least be feasible.

There's a semi-secret hilarious ending difference based on how bad you are as a spy related to the CIA lifer NPC who's probably burned more assets then a forest fire.

Steven Heck just might be what Harry would be like if he were a spy instead of a cop. Especially given the in-universe speculation that Heck isn't really a black-ops CIA agent but rather just some crazy guy who deluded himself into thinking he is and became REALLY good at it.

yeah disco elysium has how many novels' worth of dialogue that barely anyone will actually see? People like the idea of replayability, half the games out there have procedural randomly-generated everything now so they can claim umptillion hours of gameplay in the marketing copy, but to actually make that much original content your options boil down to having an algorithm spit out an infinite quantity of homogenized mush or putting in several normal games' worth of work.

I've never really had a problem killing enemies with a shotgun in Alpha Protocol. I guess it might be a problem on Hard, but even then, heavy armor and the right skills can let you clear the room if you know what you're doing.

Anyway, does anyone have any idea of how to get the Phasewalker (I think it's called) trophy on PS4? It's one of the last few from before the JV update that I still need to pick up.

It probably helps DE that the missable content is mostly writing, rather than writing combined with art assets, animations, ect.

DE's whole approach to choice is less about the 2010s ideal of diverse branching paths (that was never really achieved) and more about the much more achievable goal of allowing for character expression through how you choose to react and occasionally resolve events.

Rope Kid highlighted this, but it extremely economically gives weight to your choices via the skill check modifiers - it’s neat seeing that +1 or -1 on a check because of an action taken hours ago, but it terms of dev time, not too demanding.

I utterly love how well-done the Evrart brothers are written into the story. Scum, true slugs, but also...wouldn't you prefer them on your corner, supporting your town, over the alternative of intentional systematic neglect? Also, we're going to build a youth center being the go-to for "most useless project for a disadvantaged community but also most quickly to find support among the middle and upper crust."
