Necromunda is really the only game that successfully occupies this particular weird liminal space between skirmish wargame and tabletop RPG.

This is what had me playing Mordheim for years, and then Necromunda for years, and is why I keep getting other skirmish rulesets and being disappointed.

Necromunda terrain is the best though with how it's supposed to be so multileveled and interconnected. There's a lot of Necromunda boards out there that totally lack that, and it seems like an entirely different game.

It's playable but limited and has some simplifying changes. You want the full rulebook. And then there's the gang books and supplements and... welcome to the worst part of this game, "trying to figure out which rules to use and how to make sense of them when they obviously contradict each other".

Given GW's propensity for abandoning properties, another company coming in and filling the void, and then suddenly GW remembering that niche existed it wouldn't surprise me if there isn't a Mordgrave in the pipeline.

Eh, it's a pretty small community and if a sizable portion said "gently caress it" and refused to drop another $50+ on a gang book of mostly rehashed content, it might make a bit of an impact. Not that I think the gang books will change - like I said, I imagine we'll see an add-on book with multiple gang loadouts specific to the Ash Wastes.

They've already got Warcry filling the skirmish niche. If Mordheim were to ever come back, I would imagine it would be in conjunction with the Old World release.

I figured that this is the closest to a Blood Bowl thread. Joined a league of a friend of a friend in BB2 to help round out a league that had uneven numbers. I usually play halflings but decided to play some Goblins, since I was told some of the players were newer. They then complained about me stalling in game, even though it was just a goblin or 2 at the end of the pitch without a cage, killing at worst 2 turns so I could get to half time without burning my bribes. So the next game I had the chance, instead of stalling I just caged up, moved the cage 1 space a turn (it was an elf team that kept dodging away) and let my weapons run around slaughtering elfs. Absolutely no complaints, even though to me it was honestly much more boring to just cage as a Goblin team and it was much more of a dick move by me. I feel like maybe the people I'm playing against who are complaining just don't understand how secret weapons work.

Passing is now intended to be done by throwers. Every elf in the game is no longer Tom Brady, and that's a good thing.

Yeah, you have to specialize a bit further. Your thrower does more than just gain Leader, so you need to plan for the plays. While a lot of conventions of the playstyles from previous editions are still there, it’s a different enough game that you can’t just rely on how stuff used to work and play the updated rules.

Meanwhile, our High Elf player is up to 23 completed passes on one thrower and 6 on the other on game 8 (four league fixtures and four friendly, no-MVP or league point matches).

I really enjoyed playing Underworlds during the first and second season, but coming back to it now and it kinda feels like yet another specialist game that GW is just wringing the money out of before abandoning it. Older warband cards are basically impossible to get except on eBay, and now they seem to be ramping up the speed of rotations and subsequently how much money players would have to spend to keep up with the game . It will still be fun as a casual kitchen table thing if you've got a group, but it really had potential to be a great competitive skirmish game that stores could run events for pretty easily. The local scene for it here understandably got hit hard by covid, but this probably isn't going to help.

Definitely a bummer because basically nobody here plays Kill Team, Necromunda, Blood Bowl, or Warcry, which means it's all gonna be 2000 point games of AoS / 40k or nothing. Still bizarre to me that a big city full of college students and people with disposable income doesn't have a bigger wargaming scene.

The problem is gamers are people and people are dumb selfish ding dongs. If you are surrounded by Console Warriors of X platform you can still play your games of choice solo or online against folks. Tabletop not so much which explains why so many games are coming with Solo modes now.

If you are like me and despise tourney play of any sort and aren't available weekends EVER because you work at one of the largest casinos in North America yet people are still acting like 90% of everyone does "Banker's Hours" in spite of the first two opening 30 and 25 years ago respectively plus being near large military installations? Well you are hosed unless you can get friends to play and make schedules mesh.

Um no. It was that lots of people do in fact have different schedules and added on top of the fact trad gamers tend to not only gravitate to their game alone, but also insist on their particular format of said game, it makes it pretty tough to play outside of cajoling friends to play. I'm not on my tablet but I found a rather amusing screen cap on a YouTube show of a chan post basically mocking the RPG version of this where the poster wanted to run a GURPS game and was mostly just hounded by 5e only DnD people.

Edit: found it. there are apparently even big FB groups called like PLAY AN RPG BESIDES 5E its such an issue in games.

In general most people are only interested in X played in Y format on Z timeframe and will not remotely budge from this at all. No compromising whatsoever.

(I can sorta understand it especially from a financial standpoint especially the CCG and Minis nerds whose game is a money treadmill from Hell even if you aren't chasing the Meta. Not as much in rpgs when it's "Show up and don't be a complete freak" since the GM presumably can teach you how to play and you don't need to really buy anything outside of maybe a book long term.)

Getting folks to try even good games is tough when they have their hearts set on a game and possibly gobs of money. Add in limited free time and it's a bit obvious why stuff like Underworlds might not have the player base it maybe should. (Look what happened to Warmahordes. A decently thriving community fell apart really quickly when a new edition and basically killing off their ”Street Team" happened around the same timeframe.)

Yeah organized play or tourney games all got slammed by the Pandemic but there were still people wanting to get games of 40k played.

I mostly just wanted to show pictures of one of my Warcry sessions. When our schedules mesh again next it's gonna be Underworlds cuz my friend is really a fan of it since I introduced him to it. We have been trying to promote both games but nobody seems to care much though 1 or 2 FB comments were OO UNDERWORLDS but not anyone seemingly interested in coming down to play it. (Mostly the store just has 5e games and Magic draft stuff going on weekdays. It used to have X Wing but it seems to have mostly fallen off a cliff. The historical stuff is always weekends so I'm safe from actually learning ASL.)

The pandemic brought the issue to the fore, but there are more reasons to have a solo mode on your game than just COVID and the possibility of something similar happening again.

Wargames Vault has a bunch of "solitaire" games on it, long before the 'rona raised its head.

My favorite part of this hobby is the rules arguments.
Honestly, I have found attendance to be an issue in a lot of games for my area (STL MO.) Xwing has bounced back OK, and I haven't checked into 40k or AoS's community much, but for "less popular" games like Underworlds, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Conquest, Infinity, Star Wars Legion...it's a struggle to get more than 5-6 people for an event. Compound it with other things like Underworlds getting pricier and releasing faster. I'm probably just going to buy Rivals decks and the occassional warband to play with the 3-4 others who I know play and sell off the rest (I was a completionist up into the pandemic for UW.)

That's not to say no one's playing these. Adepticon saw a 30 some odd player event for UW (although they planned for about 90...) and AMG's games combined with Infinity took up almost as much room as 40k did.

I think a lot of it has to do with people's lives just being upended with the pandemic, and either have all new schedules with kids, jobs, etc, or just straight up found new hobbies. It might take a while longer still for some of the smaller games to get back up to speed.

Yeah, our league is at 14 people now, with more interested in joining once the next season starts.

My Renegades are getting pretty good - Skaven is almost up to being a discount Hakflem, my minotaur has Block, and using random skills has helped build out a surprisingly robust roster - my most experienced Linewoman is now at Two Heads/Block/Horns, and I’m debating if Strip Ball might be a good call as a chosen skill, and my Rat Ogre has lucked into the fun combination of Arm Bar/Prehensile Tail/Tackle which is absolutely devastating, plus I now have a Pro Ogre.

Biggest danger now is playing a friendly match against our league’s Snotling player, who has something like 700k in inducements on me and a goal to pull 32 fouls during the game with the help of Da Black Gobbo and Morg. Oh well, I volunteered for it, and I can never turn down a friendly game, especially if I wouldn’t normally face him during the regular season.

Don't do anything hasty. Odds are even that it won't have a bunch of core campaign stuff like the trading post tables. Instead I'd expect it to have an entirely new, mostly-incompatible ash-waste specific campaign layer.

I wouldn't say "a lot of plastic" would be much of a factor since GW uses the lightest and least amount of plastic for their sprues, usually when I judge the value it's how much cardboard/paper is in it
