The driver going 110 mph was doing everything right, plus the kids weren't even wearing helmets so they're clearly at fault.

Like other people in this thread have said, there is no good reason why they shouldn't cap vehicle speeds at 90mph at most, more realistically at something like 70, with GPS adjustments based on where you are (i.e. you can't go over 20-25 in a residential area)

Fighting back would have probably got the cyclist jailed

a few years back two cyclists were attacked by a driver on Butler St here and fought back with a lock. One got fifteen years.

Idk this sounds a lot different, it doesn’t say anything about them getting attacked either

quote:

Police said Hughes spit on John Hrabolowski’s car, broke his side mirror and used a metal U-shaped bike lock to hit him several times. Hughes’ girlfriend, Sherryl Feli, 34, of Lawrenceville kicked Hrabolowski while he was on the ground.

Police said Hughes and Feli were riding bicycles and became enraged about Hrabolowski’s driving.

That's essentially a cop press release, the driver got pissed off waiting behind them and tried to sideswipe them when he passed.

You don't get a fair shake as a cyclist around here, ever.

a bus equipped with pdc turrets that detect incoming drivers and neutralize them before they can hit the bus would be a good start

a modern Toyota Camry V6 accelerates faster off the line than a seventies Lamborghini did, I live right off a stroad that's become a drag race from light to light and people are constantly crashing and dying.

Maybe roads that were designed and metered in an era when 20 second 0-60 times were the norm should be redesigned.

lower speed limits, fewer lanes, actual traffic enforcement

there's zero reason for a commercial street running through a residential area to have four lanes where people hit 70mph between lights.

Here's a good list of traffic calming devices:

https://globaldesigningcities.org/p...ing-strategies/

The idea is to fill the road with visual and physical features that either make drivers feel that they should drive more slowly or actually force them to slow down.

Yeah I wish we could get that stuff in more places in the US

Just reducing the number of lanes is probably more realistic but it's still politically extremely difficult

Unfortunately american traffic engineers still have this mindset that the most important thing for safety is widening roads and eliminating anything that might cause cars to slow down or to crash if they lose control, including trees alongside the road

Downtown Pittsburgh incorporated traffic calming on Penn Ave by making it one way and converting the other direction to a bike lane and the inchoate frothing rage was incredible.

This is a bigger problem than most people think.

Every single traffic engineer comes out of school having learned nothing other than how to make the largest number of cars move as fast as possible through cities. Their work is judged entirely on car throughput. The design handbook they follow is from the 1960s and is about nothing but car throughput. Their professional certification is granted by organizations that only care about moving cars. And yet we expect those same people to fix our streets.

It's going to take something major to make safe streets something other than an occaisonal special project.

An armed bicyclist shot a driver who slammed into another cyclist in the East End over the weekend. The man was riding with a pack of cyclists in the 5000 block of Jefferson Street when 26-year-old Jose Angel Hernandez allegedly rammed into a woman on a bike, according to ABC13.

The armed bicyclist feared for his life, police told the news station, and opened fire on Hernandez while he was still in his vehicle. Hernandez allegedly yelled that the cyclists shouldn't be on the street before hitting the woman.
The driver was charged with aggravated assault.

This is more of a Texas law specific distinction than willfully ignoring a crime. I don't think "attempted murder" is a legal definition for a crime in Texas. Aggravated assault seems like the right call here. I'm not a lawyer.
