I've gone through the arbitration service three times and they've always found my favour and returned my deposit. I was definitely correct in all 3 instances, but they seem inclined to find in favour of tenants. Just make sure you have photographs and evidence, and ideally point out on the form exactly what rules or lease terms are being broken.

One fun one is end-of-tenancy cleaning charges. If you can show the landlord has just paid a flat-rate agency cleaning fee and that makes no assessment of how much cleaning is required you can almost always get that deduction struck off.

Thanks, yeah, I read the tenancy agreement last night and the landlord has blown past a number of dates specified in there before asking for a ridiculous sum so I don't think there's going to be too much trouble with it.

You can really see the Tories fighting against the advances of medical science post -2010, and then the COVID catastrophe at the end...

You can also see the SNP failing to deliver any meaningful improvement on public health as well!

Blaming this purely on Tory rule is a difficult thing because, as was pointed out upthread, this is a lagging indicator. The Tories might be happily privatising the structure of the Nash but they’re following up on opportunities that were first comprehensively mined by Blairite New Labour. A great deal of the structural inefficiencies in it were first implemented by Blair’s gov, for reasons entirely unclear except perhaps that the Blairite approach to the NHS was one of paranoid, total control, and to keep that control you need middle management to bean-count. A lot of quite expensive middle management.

Public health in the UK has been a failure for decades. There’s the well-known ‘Glasgow effect’ (still not really understood afaik) but generally speaking it’s all bad. It’s one of the major reasons we did so badly as a population during the first wave or two of Covid. Whilst Gov regs were undoubtedly too little and too late, we’re just an unhealthy population to begin with. Consistent underinvestment in social housing leads to poor living conditions; under-investment in education leads to poor social mobility and freedom of choice; under-investment in social safety nets means that too often people are unable to make good choices because they’re simply trying to work enough hours to not die of cold, hunger, or neglect. And that’s all there before you get to the rising obesity, rising rates of drinking too much (guilty) and we don’t seem to be able to get people to stop smoking (intermittently guilty).

And all that is before we get to decades of underfunding for the NHS. Politically, public health and the NHS have long been regarded as different political objects. This is nonsense: a healthy population starts with serious monetary investment in public health through things like flexible working, increased minimum wage, tighter advertising controls, more green space, better state-subsidised childcare, renter protections, social housing, etc. The NHS is then able to focus on disease and illness that is considerably less likely to be driven by lifestyle and living conditions, and to be what it was always intended to be: one of many arms of a comprehensive approach to public health. Public health is, really, a left ideal and requires a leftist approach to do it well. Sadly there aren’t any leftists left anywhere near government.

I could be wrong but you might have to do the arbitration first before making a claim in money court.

Time passes quickly on the weekend.

They don't have to go through arbitration, though it doesn't look good to the court if they don't.

The court are just going to do the exact same thing and award the same amounts as the arbitration service would, so they hate the courts time being wasted.

Its the hypocrisy that gets me.

So its perfectly acceptable for a Labour MP to have a wank in the comfort of their own home, but a Conservative MP isn't allowed to tempt a danger wank in the commons? Its political correctness gone mad. What happened to this country?

Victory for the workers everyone!

I'm working a few hours away from home on a 16 day blockade. The core gang were given a half decent hotel with a food allowance. Meanwhile additional workers such as myself were put in a worse hotel, with no food allowance and nowhere around to buy food apart from a Burger King and Waitrose in a petrol station.

Anyway everyone complained including the core gang that this was unfair and, after the first block of work, we wouldn't be going back to work until this was changed so everyone was in the same type of hotel and had food allowance. All us additional workers have been moved into the better hotel and have a food allowance!!

The rails. Working in a SSSI area which is a little exciting for me because we have to do things in a different way as there are rare animals around. Sadly most of the other workers couldn't care less about them.

In June 2018 designer Daniel Quasar released a redesign incorporating elements from both the Philadelphia flag and trans pride flag to bring focus on inclusion and progress within the community. The flag design immediately went viral as the Progress Pride Flag on social media, prompting worldwide coverage in news outlets. While retaining the common six-stripe rainbow design as a base, the "Progress" variation adds a chevron along the hoist that features black, brown, light blue, pink, and white stripes to bring those communities (marginalized people of color, trans individuals, and those living with HIV/AIDS and those who have been lost) to the forefront; "the arrow points to the right to show forward movement, while being along the left edge shows that progress still needs to be made."

20p charge on poly bags

I was actually wondering about this the other day. Is the 20p charge not counterproductive? Since they introduced it most supermarkets seem to have ditched their old fashioned thinner bags and replaced them with 'bags for life' you have to pay for, but in practice a significant number of people just nick those anyway. Do we not now have almost as much plastic bag waste, but it's all the much more environmentally damaging thick bags going in bins, because people never bother reusing them?

There are different type of big bags, some are biodegradable, others not.
I know my local lidl has the degradable ones as standard. But their 'freezer bags' for cold things arent

Thicker bags don't tend to blow everywhere and are theoretically less impossible to recycle than thin poly bags if we bothered recycling plastic.

Some studies show we're not using them properly at all though, so from a plastic production and energy use perspective they may still be doing more harm than good in their present form/price/presentation.
