Toilet Rascal
A rare piece of news today, unrelated to abortion and also good- Intuit has been forced to stop steering people away from free tax filing, and to pay a fine for having done so in the past.

quote:

New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced a record multistate agreement with the owner of TurboTax, Intuit Inc. (Intuit), for deceiving millions of low-income Americans into paying for tax services that should have been free. As a result of Attorney General James’ agreement, Intuit will pay $141 million in restitution to millions of consumers across the nation who were unfairly charged. In addition, Intuit must suspend TurboTax’s “free, free, free” ad campaign that lured customers with promises of free tax preparation services, only to deceive them into paying. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have signed onto the agreement.

Hopefully this combined with the government-run free file service will maybe a little bit unfuck America's relationship with the IRS

Just never going to get over how dumb madison cawthorn is. Always at the end of the day I keep getting floored with how absolutely mincebrained he is. I'm used to these people being dumb or crazy overall but with some type of applicable savvy. Some like ... administrative capability. Or silver tongue. Or something. But cawthorne always bottoms out the readings. In anything.

I expelled the r-word from my entire life like a decade ago, never use it, but poo poo goes down with cawthorn and my brain automatically just wants to be like 'oh no, he .. he's, gently caress, not supposed to say that, poo poo'

Ehhhh I'm gonna ask people to back off the gay jokes. Nobody here should care if he's gay or bi and it's kinda casual homophobia to mock Cawthorn or Lindsey Graham or whoever for being a closet case etc even if they're bigoted hypocrites. It's something mods have acted on in the past and I dunno where it falls under current D&D policy but it's something I think should at least be discouraged.

imo what's actually concerning is his behavior might be sexual harassment or assault. That's not what the GOP is gonna smear him with but that seems more likely the case.

Usually the most common response when I post that toon is that laughing at Trump's weight doesn't count, so your take is interesting.

Maybe that panel was targeted toward those who thought that making fun of Trump's small hands was the height of hilarity and/or injurious to his ego.

eta: Actually, I think it was aimed toward those who reflexively try to associate gun lovers with diminished physical attributes as some sort of super-slam.

Yeah I'm a queer guy horse as well. I appreciate the schadenfreude too and am not looking to defend fascist boy wonder, I just think it's better to mock and get angry at people for the bad things they do rather than maybe being a closeted queer person, overweight, etc.

You might also reframe it as not buying into the inevitable GOP attacks and instead focusing on the stuff Cawthorn has actually done. He's not a piece of poo poo for maybe being closeted, he's a piece of poo poo for possibly abusing his aide(s) with unwanted sexual conduct among a whole host of other things.

I realize there's a whole big discussion about whether it's appropriate to out closeted bigots and turn their sexuality into an attack on them, I'm not really trying to get into that. Just expressing my opinion.

I think it's generally considered more of a slight towards trans men than anything else.

People ain't buying tacticool poo poo and giant trucks because of their dick size, it's that "hahaha their dick is small" is used as a metaphor for their unrelenting insecurity in their own masculinity, and using that specific metaphor is, one could argue, transphobic.

I knew a lot of those people who did care about personal liberty and felt safe voting mostly Republican after abortion, gay marriage, and marijuana seemed settled their way. That limited subset might be upset.

People who started calling themselves libertarian in the last 10 years or so are lovely conservatives who want to use a more cool and popular label. Those people will not be bothered much.

It's a good question actually! A quick check of the DC statute on the subject as an example suggests that it could potentially count, with some asterisks. That statute prohibits the nonconsensual sharing of "sexual images," which it defines as "a photograph, video, or other visual recording of an unclothed private area or of sexual conduct." Assuming it can be demonstrated that whatever bits show up in the video fall into the statutory definition of "private area," or that the video itself depicts sexual conduct (which Madison is so far denying), then it counts. There is an affirmative defense for disclosures "in the public interest," which would likely be the defense raised. Apparently there's not a lot of case law on it yet so it would be an interesting case!

Regardless of how that would have applied when the video was first published, him rushing to immediately tweet that this is not sexual in nature can't possibly help his case on that front.

Even if you want to mock Trump for being ugly despite all his vanity and wealth you can do it all day with things that represent easy fashion choices rather than body properties that are difficult or impossible to change. He makes a lot of simple choices that make him look bad.

-Mock his hair. Bald guys can't help going bald and no one should tease them for it, but there are lots of ways to look good or cover it up without a ridiculous combover. Ever see the projections of if he just shaved his head? It genuinely looks pretty good by comparison.
-Mock his wardrobe. He wears expensive suits but they're shapeless out of fashion designs that clearly remind him of the 1980s but are awful on his frame and posture. Fat guys can look awesome in suits, especially when they have money for proper tailoring. Even if he just went off the rack somewhere though, he'd look fine if he picked the right style of suit in the first place.
-Mock his sloppy makeup work. Plenty of guys used to the camera like a bit too much bronzer or whatever but slopping it on carelessly is a choice he doesn't have to make.
-Mock his lying about his height. I mean, actual short guys can get shamed and degraded for it, but he's not short. He's like six feet at least. But he still can't be satisfied with that and pads on a couple inches. He claims to be two inches taller than Obama but we've seen them stand side by side and know that's not true.

I figure the same applies to everyone else. Ben Shapiro is short but I don't feel any reason to mock him for that when he has so much else going on. If someone did have a small penis, so what? If the jab is that someone tries to act hyper-masculine and comes off as an insecure fool, I don't have to think about what's in his pants.

Can undocumented kids currently even go to public schools? Surely the schools are going to blink at a kid suddenly showing up that doesn't have a birth certificate on file and no immigration papers.

It's truly wild that this is being framed as not just for undocumented kids but the entire concept of a publicly funded school system
