The only reason we know several ancient ones is because of the Rosetta Stone and similar works. If you mean, how does someone translate written language if they have no relation to it? They don't. About the best you can do is descriptive looking pictographs. Look up Linear A and B as to how translating ancient writing goes when there's no reference point.
