Sensors and data processing are improving fields of technology. Even if there were improvements in the field of “invisibility”, it would be impossible to retrofit the planes to implement them.

This kind of already happened. The radars are too good for large aircraft to be invisible any more in most situations. The F22 is still pretty stealthy but even there it's more for lower power aircraft radars at the correct angles, it's still getting spotted by ground stations. The F35 is less stealthy than that.

But almost none of these radars were designed to detect smaller, stealthy drones. That's the real arms race now, whoever has the most best drones will win the air war.

They also dont have very good counters for the drone at the moment.

The US would be really sad about their fighter force being obsolete, if they cared about operational performance at all. It being a huge waste of money was entirely the point, like a pizza place that only sells one kind of pizza for $80 dollars named "Frontello's Legitimate Pizza"

There is none, it is a monopoly. Endless overhauls and maintenance for decades, lots of money to be made.

Also the navy put a new speed limit of 15 knots (slower than WW1 speeds) on the LCS ships because if you go faster the hull cracks:

It’s darkly funny that letting the MiC off the leash in the 80’s destroyed defence capabilities in only a few decades.

State Arsenals prioritize the defence of the state above profit motive, and the more control over these industries was relinquished, the more profit maximization ate away at that. Is Boeing even primarily an aircraft company, in real terms?

https://breakingdefense.com/2022/04/pentagon-wants-500m-to-get-data-to-manage-f-35-parts/

quote:

The debate on F-35 technical data rights have been a sticking point in negotiations between the Pentagon and Lockheed in recent years, as the department has shifted its focus to lowering the sustainment cost of the aircraft. When the F-35 program was conceptualized more than two decades ago, it was structured under a “Total System Performance Responsibility” approach that gave Lockheed an unprecedented amount of power to manage the sustainment of the aircraft.

As a result, the government did not procure technical data that the government could eventually use, as needed and depending upon the circumstances, to promote vendor competition and increase government control over specific elements of sustainment,” the Government Accountability Office wrote in a report on F-35 sustainment released today.

The army wanted to design the replacement to the M2 Bradley IFV, and companies sued the government because it wasn’t fair that they were cut out of the process.

[fake edit: I was looking for an article to corroborate this, but couldn’t find one easily, so I guess consider this a rumor, here’s something funny though]

"We asked them to make an investment, and now we are switching," Norcross said. "How do we keep saying to our industrial base, 'OK, that was a screw-up. Your investments are not lost'? It's a risk; we understand. They knew it going in, but it doesn't help our case that this is the new way that we are going to do things

Lol they can’t even guarantee they’re getting what they paid for even when it’s high grade steel in an environment where it absolutely has to work as advertised. The US sub force is probably the most elite in the world, and they were short changing them the whole time. No punishment and they can’t even change vendors because they’re the one of the few who make it.

Admittedly, the Constellation class doesn’t look as bad, but it is also a 2000s era design and by the time they are commissioned in significant numbers (in the late 2020s/2030s) they will be far from a cutting edge design.
