Black suit guy looks like he's retaliating with the driest, most sarcastic quips imaginable as he's being brutally clubbed to death. He doesn't give a poo poo.

Sadly the reality was a bit more WWE:quote:Abolitionist Republicans and pro-slavery Democrats initially opted for rhetorical battles to try to remedy the ideological chasm between the two parties in the mid-19th century. But on May 22, 1856, the ire directed across the aisle erupted into physical violence when Rep. Preston Brooks of South Carolina beat Massachusetts Sen. Charles Sumner unconscious with a cane.

This is my favorite part: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caning_of_Charles_Sumner quote:Massachusetts Representative Anson Burlingame publicly humiliated Brooks by goading him into challenging Burlingame to a duel, only to set conditions designed to intimidate Brooks into backing down. (As the challenged party, Burlingame, who was a crack shot, had the choice of weapons and dueling ground. He selected rifles on the Canada side of Niagara Falls, where U.S. anti-dueling laws would not apply. Brooks withdrew his challenge, claiming that he did not want to expose himself to the risk of violence by traveling through Northern states to get to Niagara Falls.)

It’s amazing how easily they’re giving up on the issue considering it’s basically the main thing they’ve offered voters over Republicans for 30+ years.

They're not giving up on it, they're changing 40 years of messaging because it lacks inclusivity https://twitter.com/drewheineman/status/1524802194423291904 Personally I don't see a fundamental difference between "choice" and "decision"

I guess you could make the case that choice sounds slightly more casual or frivolous than decision, but feeling the need to frame it as an idpol thing shows that it's about appeasing activists rather than appealing to actual voters. Edit: Just to be clear, not suggesting that POC aren't actual voters or anything. Just talking about the hyper-bureaucratized lived experiences language that nobody without a college degree will ever find appealing. Democrats already lost white voters without college degrees, and there are signs that it's going to start happening with POC too, which would be a death sentence for the party, but there's no indication that there's any sort of plan for reversing that trend. It's still stupid though because if you look up the definition of a choice, the word "decision" is going to be there. Does it change the movie if we name it "Sophie's Decision?"zoux posted:Personally I don't see a fundamental difference between "choice" and "decision" Same. It's a stupid waste of time that I guess is trying to make language more palatable to...someone. "I chose to quit my job" means the same loving thing as "I decided to quit my job" and if I told someone about it using either sentence it would convey the same message. I made a choice and decided to quit my job. "I chose to get married and, later, decided to get divorced" is the same thing as "I decided to marry and later chose to end the marriage." Meaningless semantics, really.

Never underestimate the ability for GOP consultants to be able to twist and frame literally anything as bad. If they can do it for Fred Rodgers, I’m pretty sure they can do it for “decision”.
