OK super religious family, how old are your kids? Well, my dad rented me terminator the summer between first and second grade, so I imagine your 8 year old can probably watch the new Harry Potter thing. I have no idea.

Honestly I watched a bunch of horrible poo poo I was probably too young for, but also watching adult stuff from an early age gave me a view into the world of adults and I learned a lot.

I don't know, I'm 43 so there are probably plenty of younger people on the forums who grew up watching dedicated childrens / tweens / teen programming and seemingly turned out OK.

yeah this part worries me a lot those kids seem super susceptible to nearly any kind of real world toxic interaction because their whole vantage point of the world is based on super simplified morality plays and minecraft but even if i take the optimistic approach and say well im just a cantankerous old weirdo theyll be fine im still left with the fact that they are incredibly boring people and their parents arent much better so im officially at the point where id rather shitpost than hang out with them

The only movie for adults that little children should ever be shown is 2003's Master and Commander. And while you're watching it, you keep telling the kid that you've signed them up for the Royal Navy and they leave tomorrow. "See??" You keep yelling in the kid's ear, while you elbow them and point to the screen, "That's where YOU'RE gonna go!!!"

I was like 10ish when they came out and not super into either one. Rocko's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy were much more my speed. I always found the rugrats animation style very annoying though.

It does make me wonder what "vacation" is like in the SW universe. Are you always traveling to another planet, or do people go to different parts of the planet where they live for vacation?

I rewatched Terminator 2: Judgement Day recently and while I don’t think it was intentional, the movie is Socialist.

Allow me to put on my cinema discusso hat here for a moment. The film is about the T-800 and the Connor family achieving class consciousness. The climax of the film is them realizing that whether they’re made of bone or metal with glowy red eyes, we’re all proletariat skeletons underneath. It is in fact the forces of Capital, both human Cyberdyne and machine Skynet, and the MIC system they create that are the real enemy, that turns humans and Terminators alike against each other against their own mutual interest. Arnold’s famous line “I know now why you cry” is his statement of solidarity with his fellow workers against the cold cruelty of the capitalist system that controls both the past and future. Terminators are Humans, Humans are Terminators.

Pretty much. An aborted plot line that was (mostly) cut out from terminator salvation was that there were people who happily worked with skynet and lived comfortably. They are still visible in a few shots. I can't remember if they were explicitly noted as being wealthy people pre-war. The weirdly good/bad tv series also tried to do things with these ideas

im a cartoon accelerationist in that i think terrible cartoon quality is an important founding principle in making sure kids are motivated to seek out more rigorous material as overly high quality cartoons just encourage them to wallow in shallow commercialist propaganda

which funnily enough wasnt really an issue back before their production quality went to the shitter because the distribution methods were completely different so there was no ghetto if you want your mickey mouse cartoon you need to watch it with the scarface feature reel and youre gonna like it goddamnit

Choose this life you're on your own
Lot of discourse on the new Kendrick Album. Personally, the whole thing is about toxic masculinity and Kendrick is playing a character just like he did in GKMD.

Hell, that's what Father Time is about!

E: Just finished listening to it. It's far from Kendrick's best work (TPAB), but I'd argue that it is better than drat, at least. Kendrick totally cribbed the premise from We Cry Together from the movie Baby Boy.

Mother I Sober, Father Time, Count Me Out and Mirror are probably the best songs on there.

Auntie Diaries was good too, but I'm not looking forward to the discourse on the subject matter. Remember kids, depiction is not endorsement.

Speaking of kids and violence I've been trying to show my kid Jackie chan stunts, he really likes them. The violence bothers him some and a friend of mine said it's because kids process it as "real" for the same reason I like it - he shows he's getting hurt, people are visibly smacking into things, it isn't just cgi laser beams. So marvel movies can have a ton of gunfire bouncing off heroes, or even going through black widows shoulder, but the kids never worry whereas Jackie looks like he's about to fall off a train and die and it worries them

It's just weird that rumble in the bronx, avengement, and John wick are all R with completely different levels of violence
