If you really want to measure impact the money Brees donates could also have gone to paying taxes and perhaps had a greater affect on society than going to inefficient charities where a high percentage of the money is spent on administration. The difference is it wouldn't be spent locally and it wouldn't make the local news. There's a reason Republicans love to talk about cutting social nets and replacing them with charities - because it works out well for them.
