PA has a ton of the GOP version of the much derided Panera Bread voter. People with bios much like McCormick. It's not all red hat overall wearing yahoos. Oz himself is an Ivy League elite, he just happens to be one with TV celebrity and a Trump endorsement.

Woo! Cawthorn got primaried!

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/05/17/madison-cawthorn-gop-primary-results-polls-close-in-north-carolina.html

CNBC posted:

Rep. Madison Cawthorn, the scandal-prone freshman lawmaker backed by former President Donald Trump, conceded defeat in his Republican primary election, Cawthorns spokesman told reporters Tuesday night.

Cawthorn called State Sen. Chuck Edwards to concede the race, the spokesman said, according to NBC News. Edwards had been endorsed by U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C.

NBC has yet to project a winner in Cawthorns congressional district.

Congratulations to @ChuckEdwards4NC on securing the nomination tonight, Cawthorn said in a tweet. Its time for the NC-11 GOP to rally behind the Republican ticket to defeat the Democrats nominee this November.

North Carolina voters on Tuesday had already decided who will compete in one of this years critical U.S. Senate races: Rep. Ted Budd will win the Republican Senate primary in the race to fill the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Richard Burr, NBC projected.

Budd is backed both by Trump and the influential conservative group Club for Growth. He will face off in the general election against Cheri Beasley, the former chief justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, who NBC projected would handily clinch the Democratic nomination.

The swing-state contest is one of a handful that will determine whether Democrats keep their majority in the Senate split 50-50 by party.

Cawthorn is one of 13 U.S. House members from North Carolina. Now 26 years old, Cawthorn was the youngest member of Congress when he was elected in 2020. His seat, which was previously held by ex-Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows, is a safe Republican district.

Nevertheless, the first-term lawmakers reelection bid became one of the states most-watched primary races, thanks to a wide range of scandals and missteps that spurred harsh criticism even from some Republicans.

The controversies swirling around Cawthorn include: making claims about other lawmakers doing illicit drugs and inviting him to orgies; driving with a revoked license; bringing a loaded handgun to an airport; being eyed by ethics watchdogs over suspicions about possible insider trading related to a meme cryptocurrency; calling Ukraines president a thug amid an invasion by Russia; and others.

Tillis came out swinging against Cawthorn. He endorsed Edwards, a top rival in the GOP primary. A political action committee affiliated with Tillis reportedly spent more than $300,000 on ads attacking Cawthorn. And after the watchdogs raised concerns of possible insider trading, Tillis openly called for a congressional ethics investigation into Cawthorn.

Trump, meanwhile, defended Cawthorn in a social media post over the weekend.

Recently, he made some foolish mistakes, which I dont believe hell make again, Trump said of Cawthorn, adding, Lets give Madison a second chance!

Asked by NBC News about Trumps post, Tillis replied, Technically, this is the sixth or seventh chance.

He hasnt learned from a mistake hes made over the last year, the senator said of Cawthorn.

I don't know anything about the guy that won the primary. Chances are, he's worse than Cawthorn.

Idaho is fully run by the crazies, since the Governor is basically just a rubber stamp for whatever stupid poo poo the legislature passes, and everyone running the state is batshit crazy.

In the last few years, Idaho has attempted to make it illegal for investigate journalists to report about diaries, tried to leave the Powerball because it's involved in a vast conspiracy for Australia to take all our guns away, briefly made collecting child support outside the state impossible because the legislature thought it was going to lead to Sharia law, and had the Lieutenant Governor attempt to invade Mexico when the Governor left the state for 48 hours.

Dems are probably praying for another 2010 or 2012, where every single economic, political, and geographic fundamental absolutely should have resulted in the Republicans taking the Senate with a 2 to 4 seat majority, but they had crazy people nominated and constantly blow it by talking about legitimate rape, witchcraft, or being someone that Republican primary voters loved who was hated by the state at large.

I mentioned to someone last night that common sense says the upcoming election is an absolute bloodbath for Democrats, but the variables are enormous. On top of all the usual uncertainties, the Dobbs decision hangs over everything like the sword of Damocles. Some of PA's results were surprising, and I'll point again to Democrats having a higher vote total there as an interesting thing to take note of. It feels like whatever we think we know about this election right now could be completely and utterly wrong within a few months. Which isn't unusual, I guess, but I've spent the past 1.5 years assuming this year's election was a complete lock for Republicans to demolish the field and poo poo might not shake out that way.

That is exactly the point. The discrepancy between the House performance and the Senate performance.

They blew 5 Senate seats with extremely winnable races in 2010. Mike Castle was polling 25+ points ahead of Chris Coons (who volunteered for the race as a sacrificial lamb and ended up a Senator) and had been a Republican Governor in Delaware for 8 years and had been re-elected to a statewide office in Delaware every election cycle since 1969.

They should have had control of the Senate - 2010 was a historic disaster of a midterm for Democrats and Republicans still managed to lose the Senate by blowing races in West Virginia of all places. And they followed that up by blowing Senate races in Montana, North Dakota, Florida, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, and Virginia by nominating terrible candidates.

Blowing 12 Senate seats in 2 years - including races where you had 25+ point leads or in states that are R+30 - during the same year you had the largest midterm victory for your party in history is ridiculous. Especially since every single one of those races were "Solid R" or "Lean R" before they nominated their candidate.
