the short lil clip of m'benga doing some fishing was my favorite bit of a very very good episode. i was just stoked that he got to do some chill fishing, and i would have gladly watched five minutes of a plotless sequence of him just hanging out and casting and enjoying the view 😎 good for you, buddy

I haven’t caught up on the thread so I don’t know what the prevailing attitude is, but that SNW was literally the most I’ve enjoyed Star Trek in.. honestly? .. probably, ever.

I can’t believe it’s the year 2022 and I’m saying this about nu-trek, but I think SNW got it RIGHT.

I hope it doesn’t come across as hyperbole. LD was probably the most I enjoyed Star Trek to date, even this tops even that.

It turns out Kirk, the youngest captain in starfleet history, wasn't much of a reader. He was good at his job. Passionate. A master of the double punch. But there was loads of stuff he'd never heard of, and then he'd say the Federation has no record of this or that and Spock would just let it go rather than contradicting him in front of everyone.

Uhura, McCoy, and probably Kirk had never seen one, but who knows about other people. It's just a blurb on a PADD though, it can be taken as seriously as the Buckaroo Banzai references on LCARS graphics in TNG, which is maybe also why they don't fix the typos

Also at the end are we supposed to think Chapel has a thing for Ortega?

I definitely did think Chapel had a thing for Ortega, though that's probably because I am gay and I think both of them are cute and I want them to be cute and gay together.

And each of those TOS episodes feels like it's about 100 minutes long

They actually are quite a bit longer than current TV shows just due to the fewer ad breaks they had back then

I've said it before but in the late 90s when they remastered them and put them on sci-fi channel, they cut a ton of "content" to fit them into an hour timeslot with modern commercial breaks ans lost almost nothing, there is so much filler in each episode

A while back I rewatched Assignment Earth for the first time in like 20 years when it became clear Picard was revisiting the Gary Seven concept and I was kinda blown away by how much time they spent just lingering on establishing shots of buildings or Apollo stock footage

It's loving ponderous, but I'll take it any day over the edited version that airs on TV loaded to the gills with ads.

Have they ever shown us Vulcan arts and artists? I can see them either being just as logical and selectively emotional as your standard vulcan, but focusing on the logic of art, creative expression, and their species' particular appreciation of aesthetics... or could see them being more empathetic and more willing to embrace illogical ideas and concepts, albeit still in a very vulcan fashion that doesn't commit or surrender the way other species artists might.

Vulcan rituals and art and elaborate clothing feels against their nature at first, but it makes sense.

They're all forms of expression and communication. Why limit that to just verbal and written words?

I'm not a ToS superfan but I don't really get the point of paving over it, it's an important show that's still loved by a lot of people. IMO to avoid ToS canon from getting in the way, they should just set new, non-Picard shows in the same timeline as Picard! Then you can do whatever without people getting mad.

I'd like to credit this post as the moment I'll probably live long enough to see a balding Finn Wolfhard reboot TNG as Picard.

She doesn't move much in closeup and it seems like she's subtly holding the dress up while walking carefully so I guess it is a lot stiffer than the curves suggest. They did not shoot her below the hips walking in this costume except in the wide shot so it's hard to get a good screencap.

Probably the easiest way to achieve this effect would be to laminate the fabric material into a stiff transparent plastic appliance and just shoot around it so the audience doesn't notice it's rigid.

Yeah that production photo color wises looks super different then the actual scene so when skipping through the episode last night missed it. Also seems to have bit of compression which made it seem sort of off. Went back and and found the scene. You can see there's a thin fabric thing that goes over her shoulders and she basically doesn't move during the scene. So yeah I'd guess a plastic embedded onto a thin fabric thing designed to hold the weight. Never would of noticed the fabric underneath if the question wasn't asked.

Whoever did the costume A+ job.

Ok the scene with Chapel and Spock is a great use of the AR wall. They are shooting a simple shot-reverse-shot scene, but the AR wall is in both scenes! All they have to do is shoot the scene once with the AR wall displaying one end of the room, and then shoot the scene again with the AR wall displaying the other end of the room. The dinner table and the bar are the only foreground elements besides the actors.
