Grew up in the 80s, loving cars. To me wedge cars are all pretty boring, cookie cutter shapes, most of which are probably bricks in the wind (though I find I do like ike the TR7 and 8 for some reason). Give me an organic shape:

It's the difference between first-order optimization (F-117) and second-order (B-2). Then getting to Be Clever with Computers (F-22).

Indeed. What the goal is changes the shapes you need, but for the example of say efficiency, there's a reason the Prius and several competitors (Insight, one of the Hyundais spring to mind) are shaped the way they are, with the funky cut off rear, because computer says so.

Presumably most of those wedges just wanna fly off at any speed.

Melkus RS1000 on the Nurburgring.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPbJ9pcnPPw

More of them shot from outside the car

The Melkus RS1000 is a race car developed in the German 'Democratic' Republic in the 1970s by a driving school owner. A race car in the DDR, you say?

Yes. No, the authorities didn't include race cars in their economic plans. The guy made it from Wartburg parts. Wartburg drum brakes, unboosted. Wartburg 3 cylinder 2 stroke engine. And then a whole lot of fibreglass and ingenuity.
I guess the authorities were too busy trying to secure some low grade bananas and oranges for the masses, rather than put resources into stopping a driving school owner making sports cars on a small scale. Or one of the officials was given one as a bribe to allow him to. Both are equally likely.

The one in the video is made with 3 MZ motorcycle carburetors and probably some more east german performance parts. But in the end, it's still a 1.1 liter, 3 cylinder sedan/van engine, tickled to between 75 and 100hp depending on the specific build. With a weight of between 650 and 700kg, they were pretty drat quick to eastern bloc standards.

It sounds absolutely amazing. The vans fitted with this engine sounded exactly the same, only the amount of speed accompanying that sound track was a LOT lower.

If you're wondering why the guy appears to be coasting through corners, it's because he is. It looks positively scary. It's a mid/rear engined car.
The Wartburg transmission has a freewheel to prevent the two stroke engine from getting oil starvation. With the throttle closed, no premix fuel with oil in it is introduced into the cylinders, but if the engine is being revved pretty high by the engine braking effort, the engine speed VS available lubrication is very crappy and it'll wear it out and/or cause a 'klemmer', the engine would seize.

Huh. I had the pickup and none of the others. Nice to know what it came apart for now! 8 yo me would have begged for the rest of them.

I remember who gave it to me and why, too. John Clark, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His shop's tow truck looked almost like the toy, just with a boom and dollies on the back.

Mechanic by trade, and an old family friend. He liked that I liked cars. Always happy to show me the work he was doing on my parents' lovely little vehicles. He gave me stickers for my little Lego toolbox. Still got it somewhere in storage. Metallic red Satan, crossed hammer and axe, "Who steals my tools, dies!"

He bought one of our cars, a wrecked 1989 4-door Sentra, and used it as a stunt car. The setup: small car in reverse, a lifted F250 on tractor tires chasing it around in D on Hawkeye Downs Raceway. They painted up our old Sentra in camo and put a fake M60 on top. They did that as an intermission between tractor pulls and demo derby. poo poo was doooope!

I've still got the Super Soaker that was basically a water cannon. Only one shot, maybe two, but it was like almost 2L in one blast.
And a couple of the 2x 1L bottle ones, and an original SS, I think. Hiding out in my closet with other toy and prop weapons, because I'm a giant man-child nerd.
