3-0 lead and I'm looking at cup tickets at MSG because why not. I'm not sure why I expected less but yikes, these are steep as poo poo. Not sure how much I'd be willing to spend to go into enemy territory but maybe if I just go with the Nordiques gear Rangers fans won't even know?

Apparently Kadri left the arena with his arm in a cast, so he's done for the playoffs.

I think I'm done with the NHL. Tired of watching idiots run around trying to injure other players with no repurcussions and referees deciding whether or not to call penalties based on whichever team is winning or just because they feel like it or not. It's like the NHL wants to just be an entertainment product like the WWE or some poo poo, rather than a legitimate sporting competition. It was pretty obvious last game that Kane was trying to injure Cale Makar and he faced no repercussions for doing so. Lo and behold, as a result, this game he gets another chance to injure one of the Avs star players and succeeds.

In the NHL playoffs, teams are basically incentivized to go out of their way to try to injure the other team's best players. Take the Rangers for example, they would have been done in the first round if they didn't knock Sidney Crosby out. Instead, now they are probably going to win the Stanley Cup...

The NFL figured out like 15 years ago that it's not good for the actual sport when half the star players get knocked out of the playoffs with injuries and implemented rules to prevent that from happening. But the NHL seems to think that's completely fine.

friend, I think you're thinking about it the wrong way. on one hand, it 100% sure is an entertainment product owned by the same people as Comcast, Wal-Mart, and Delaware North. so relax and enjoy it. the hockey is exciting and fun.

on the other hand, it 100% sure is a sporting event, it's just not the in the way you are thinking. it's one that's inexorably tied up in all kinds of poo poo from Canada's Tough and Gruff National Self Image to the standard psycho legacy building sports poo poo to all kinda of other stuff. the competition is not purely about hockey, it's about winning whatever that is.

which means all the other stuff--handling the media, rest and recovery, team chemistry--is part of it because it is part of it. and there are millions of dollars and lifelong dreams at stake. they can legislate some of it out, but the pressures that exist to cause Kane to board the gently caress out of Kadri to get back into the series will continue to exist. and it'll always be a contact sport, so there will always be players that play and push the line. no one will ever break kayfabe about it, but everyone in the 90s wished they had Scott Stevens on their team for more than just his two-way play.

tl;dr, there's no way to get rid of those incentives unless you get rid of all physical contact, and that will never happen. and even if you did, you'd have guys running goalies more or God knows what. Dehumanize Yourself and Face to Trouba

There was just an athletic article about Trouba with old school defensemen talking about Trouba and how beneficial his hitting is in general

It’s 100%’part of the sport to try to hurt someone with a hard hit. Just like it is with the NFL
Most guys aren’t trying to legitimately injure someone like “I hope I concuss this guy or break his body” but they definitely hope to hit a guy so hard over and over that the guy getting hit can’t play as well

Quoting to show my suppory for this take, as it mirrors a lot of my dissatisfaction with NHL culture (& NFL).

And it's not just about stars being taken out and it impacting the Cup winners.

It's lovely to watch a competition where a team that doesn't push the rules (designed to protect players) to their breaking point is often at a competitive disadvantage. In the end the fanbase is who ends up suffering, and they'll feel like it's a choice between sticking with their team despite the tilted playing field or just abandoning the process entirely.

We're all subjected to seeing the above happen in American politics, so why experience the same with sports? ::dumbrim:

Exactly. For the average fan, the playoffs is the only time they are really going to watch hockey. You'd think the NHL would want to protect players so that the best players on each team are available to watch during the playoffs and you'd think they'd want the rules to actually be enforced more strictly, so that the best teams and players are able to shine, but it's like the NHL is trying to self sabotage.

I was at a game with some coworkers last series, most of the people I went with didn't know much about hockey so I was trying to explain some basic rules and concepts to them during pauses in the action... at one point, a player blatantly tripped the puck carrier and one of my coworkers asked "is he allowed to do that?!". I said "no, that's supposed to be a penalty, but usually the referees don't call a lot of penalties that SHOULD be penalties once the playoffs start". Imagine how stupid that sounds to somebody that is trying to get interested in a new sport...
