My luggage was delayed on a connection from Hong Kong back to Okinawa so the airline, upon my bags hitting the ground, had someone drive three hours in a horrendous tropical storm to drop it off to where I was staying . Contrast that with Delta Airlines and, well, yeah.

Yeah, my bag got set aside on my trip to New Zealand (my very first flight, from PDX to LAX, was cancelled after I checked in. airline got me rerouted blah blah, word never got to the luggage department so my bag stayed in Portland) and it took a good hour futzing around in NZ at the airport to figure this out. They gave me a bag of toiletries, a basic change of clothes, and then pulled out the ole envelope of petty cash and peeled off $250 NZ and just gave it to me, no forms no nothing. That helped alleviate the situation, let me tell you.

And then they drove my bag halfway across the south island a few days later when it did arrive. I was fairly pleased with their level of service.

An example of how ending weapons to Ukraine is more complicated than just shoving things into cargo planes or railroad cars.

quote:

The M777 is highly mobile and capable of firing long distances, but training has been a bottleneck in deploying the howitzers, Ukrainian officers say. At courses in Germany that lasted a week, the United States trained soldiers to fire the weapon and others to maintain it.
But an oversight nearly delayed all maintenance on the guns at the hard-to-reach front lines, Ukrainian officers said. The entire M777 machine is put together on the imperial system used in the United States, meaning that using a Ukrainian metric wrench on it would be difficult, and would risk damaging the equipment.

Only after sending the guns did the United States arrange for a rushed shipment of toolboxes of imperial-gauge wrenches, said Maj. Vadim Baranik, the deputy commander of a maintenance unit.

But tools can be misplaced, lost or destroyed, potentially leaving guns inoperable unless someone scrounges up a U.S.-supplied wrench.

And the JIM LR, capable of displaying extremely accurate targeting data, supplies the information, known as grid coordinates, in a widely used NATO format that Sergeant Pysanka has to convert to the Soviet-era coordinate system used on the Ukrainians’ maps. Such minor speed bumps and chances for error add up, especially when under the stress of a Russian artillery barrage.

Flying on Aeroflot and connecting through Moscow once, my incoming flight to Moscow was delayed and I missed the 1x/day flight to NYC. Since I was just transiting I didn't have a visa to enter Russia, so I was escorted via armed guard to a guarded wing of a hotel and told to stay in the room and they would come fetch me the next day before the flight. I guess it's better than in the US where they'd just say "gently caress you, sleep in the concourse" but it felt extremely grim.

Every flight to the US requires a visa, even if you're transiting, so you wouldn't have a situation where you're stuck in limbo.

Can definitely happen in the UK and EU, though.

Basically, it sucks when you have an airport designed before airport security was a thing. I do miss being able to sit at a gate, watching the planes come in, waiting for a loved one.

Coming in from canada to lax you have to reclear security when headed to another terminal. Was really fun with a 45 minutes layover. I made it to the gate with 2 minutes before boarding ended
