My understanding is that there's a couple of competing theories on why it had a huge uptick in popularity: 1- The practical: It took off around 2012 with the big rise of the assorted Tube-style streaming sites because it's an easy thing to sell with the various banner ads. "Hot Step-XXX railed by their YYY" is easily understood and fits in a small number of words while also hitting that "taboo" thing. Much like "Hot Singles in Your Area". After that, it was self-reinforcing: Faux-cest ads were generating clicks, so companies marketed it more and made more of it. Don't fix what ain't broke. And interviews I've seen indicate it's literally a thousandfold increase over the last decade. 2- The cultural: It's a combination of the other most traditional taboo (inter-racial) becoming more socially accepted and therefore less interesting, but also the fact that the millennials (which data showed were the primary drivers of Faux-cest) coming from smaller families (my roommate and myself both have parents that are 1 of 6 kids, none of our generation of grandkids have had more than 3). The smaller family units and often lack of near siblings makes the notion of a sibling relationship more "interesting". Probably a mix of those and other factors, but yeah, TL;DR all data shows that it's millennials using streaming Tube porn sites driving Faux-cest since ~2012.

My hunch is that most people who watch it probably don’t have any incestual feelings themselves but are attracted to the taboo nature of it, which I think tracks with what the posts above said.

This is generally the case. People don't actually want to gently caress their sisters/brothers/dads/mothers, but the idea of it gets them going. Its true for a lot of fetishes.

It costs basically nothing to have the actors spend a minute talking about being sexy step siblings, and it's not really offensive enough to make most people pass on it instead of just skipping to the good bits, so it gets some extra clicks from whatever segment is into it with no real cost or risk.

The Marquis de Sade certainly set a new standard for depraved and immoral sexual writings including but not limited to pedophilia, rape, and murder but you also have to remember that he was French.

The thing to understand about de Sade is that he was arrested for sodomising a prostitute in an era where that could carry a death sentence. But his wealth got it commuted to a private cell in the Bastille where he passed his time eating (thanks to his own private pastry chef) until he got so fat he could no longer stand. And writing about how his circumstances were the fault of women and how much he hated them and what he wanted to do to them. Usually, with one hand. Oh, and also how rich men should be allowed to do anything they please and how dare society try to tell them otherwise. He made up a whole 'philosophy' about it called, Libertine - very similar to Libertarianism, only with more paedophilia. People make him out to be this raging monster, a Reign of Terror-era Hannibal Lector, but he was the Ur incel. A pathetic spoiled man unable to realise his own blame in what had led him to where he ended up and writing endless, bitter tirades about it. And I have to point out, they were also really bad. Like, really really bad. Which is the only reason anyone remembers him. When they stormed the Bastille, they found all his works and they were distributed and reproduced to show how depraved the aristocracy were. And, people being people, just couldn't get enough of how scandalising they were.

The only thing he wrote in the Bastille was 120 Days, which he wrote in secret and while it was found after the storming of the Bastille, it wasn't published until the 1900s. The bulk of what he wrote that we know were written (I think?) between his expulsion from the National Assembly and getting bonked back into horny jail for good It is super, super bad tho
