What is going wrong with that one (face is longer than it should be)

The sound effects in at least Star Trek, if not generally across the industry, seem to have gotten a lot wimpier over the years. The phasers in Wrath of Khan sound really vicious, but Trek '09 sounds like they're in a paintball match.

Ben Burtt is 73 and hasn’t done anything since 2015 other than appear in a documentary and do some work for a Star Wars web series. He essentially retired after working on The Force Awakens.

He also worked on ST09 and Into Darkness, so .

Maybe his retirement is a new development, but it doesn't sound like it was by choice.

He’s also “looking for feature-film work, but nothing’s come my way.”

I don’t know if there’s bad blood,” he answered. “Nobody . . . I was just never consulted or hired to do any of them. No one’s ever told me why. No, I was told—on the new regime, I was just told, ‘Just stay in your room and make sounds and just send stuff to us. We’ll decide what to do.’”

Disney might have to pay him fair wages whereas they can sucker some star-wars-poisoned kid out there to do it next to free.

We haven't had that spirit here since 1969.

Speaking of Star Wars sound effects, I once ran across an anecdote (and I hope it's true) from the set of ep. 1. It seems George Lucas had to tell Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor that they don't have to make the lightsaber noises themselves with their mouths, there was a whole department that would do that. They were out there going "voomp, voomp, ksssssh" like eight-year-olds swinging a toy around. :3:

This is apparently a thing with a lot of actors in Star Wars projects. Allegedly Laura Dern had to be told to quit making "pew pew" noises when Holdo fired a blaster in TLJ.

I think Mandy Patinkin did the same thing with the sword fights in The Princess Bride.

McFadden was originally cast as a ship's school principal, that's why she was brought in with a kid. Originally the episodes focusing on her were intended to be more relaxed and her character the comic relief of main characters, something akin to Neelix.

Her role was revised to become the doctor when they decided to axe the school storylines, and were still without anyone booked or auditioned for the doctor's role.

Then the sexual harassment and firing happened, Muldaur decided that she doesn't like sci-fi and left, and Gates was brought back because other actors demanded it. According to that 50 year mission book she was called the moment Diana Muldaur left office after leaving her notice.

Since Muldaur never got main cast billing I'm guessing the plan was always to get McFadden back?

I also just found out that McFadden's TNG hiatus was when she did The Hunt for Red October.

That 50YM-book doesn't mention that it was her intention to come back after being away, only that because the asshat who decided to throw her out was gone and Muldaur left this option opened up.

So Stewart et al. basically dictated that she will be given the option to come back or else.
