Okay I have never listened to KD before and just listened to Abigail. My thoughts:

King Diamond is very good.

but Mortician is better.

Pillaging Villagers - s/t: Folk punk/crossover thrash concept album telling the story of a righteous peasant revolt overthrowing their oppressors.

Disfuneral - Blood Red Tentacle: Death. Metal.
https://disfuneral-fr.bandcamp.com/album/blood-red-tentacle

Bergfried - Romantik I: Just a 4 song EP, but it rules. Weird mixture of poppy folk rock and trad metal, and even some black metal flavour in the first track. It's irresistibly fun, even if the last track is an inexplicable country song.

Saints 'N' Sinners - Rise of the Alchemist: Apparently Edguy worship is a thing now.

how come anything having to do with fantasy/magic/goblins/knights is basically always related to tolkien? did he not have any contemporaries or were there no other figures to create that kind of setting to do it well or effective? maybe lord of the rings is just the most successful?

He fully realized and defined a lot of the standard fantasy tropes you see in media and did it better than almost anyone and has held strong through the fantasy genre/gaming/writing/music/culture since the books were released.

Most successful, bigger scale than any fantasy author before him, blew up in 60s and 70s alongside rock music itself. Led Zeppelin and Rush were doing LOTR references in their songs. Even Sabbath. Also the books are just extremely metal. swords and demonic evil and hairy men who smoke and kick rear end.

There’s definitely Conan metal though.

Yes.
Yeah it's not only about the sheer success as a novel, but also the colossal cultural impact. No other fantasy setting is anywhere near the kind of institution as Tolkien's mythos. And the sheer depth and expansiveness of it probably also helps. Also the, let's say authenticity; the Legendarium feels more like an actual mythology than a contemporary work of fiction.

And I wouldn't say it's "almost always", there's plenty of schlocky power metal who make albums with just generic fantasy nonsense, or about their own homebrew fantasy worlds.

It feels like Lovecraft-inspired works tend to be more Inspired By Lovecraft and less directly Lovecraft because Lovecraft was, even by the standards of his time, very very racist and very unsubtle about it in some of his stories.

Meanwhile, over in the world of bookwriting people, there's grown to be a whole little "Lovecraft but seriously gently caress racism" thing. For example Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys, which starts off with some surviving human/Deep One hybrids from the Innsmouth raid getting chucked in an internment camp with a bunch of Japanese-American civilians and then kind of forgotten about and quietly released after the war. Interesting stuff.
