He cut his arm off so that, technically, he is unarmed and can't be targeted.

Yeah that's a tactic of desperation, but also a way to utilise two useless resources: huge RPG rocket reserves, and a guy with three limbs. Maybe he can suppress some enemies or even hurt one, and if he dies it's a net positive.

Eh. I worked in a somewhat shady industry in the early 2000s and somehow got an unhealthy amount of exposure to the parasocial romance / mail order bride circles and saw/read a lot of discussions between people in them. At the time, for avoidance of doubt.

The stereotype at the time was that Eastern European men, on average, are backward, sexist, irresponsible, violently drunk manchildren (3 generations of men coddled by their mothers after all the decent men got killed off in the wars is another stereotype I've seen) Which, in turn, led to a very fierce competition for the few decent men that exist and supposedly made every blandly average Western man a catch.

It wasn't entirely unwarranted (and it's been internalised as well), but I'm a little surprised to see it still living on 20 years later. As far as I'm concerned, it's racism/prejudice against EE folk.

White blonde thin women are fetishized in western culture. Eastern Europe has more white blonde women than other parts of the world, except Scandinavia.

Oh, I know, Latvia is #1 in those stats. Most men, except for the more cooked of conservatives, recognize that women are their intellectual peers, especially when it comes to white-collar work. If you shift your view to blue-collar work, it’s a massive sexist poo poo show once again, with completely nonsensical categories and assumptions. Like, complete nonsense – people will say that women cannot work in construction due to being frail, while also saying that they are perfect fit for healthcare, to carry 150 kg alcoholics to toilet and back in hospital. :iiam:

Business stats like https://eng.lsm.lv/article/society/society/latvia-a-world-leader-in-gender-equality-under-the-law.a311353/ or

are nice, or course, but they don’t tell the entire story. When looking at the broader picture – https://eige.europa.eu/gender-equality-index/2021/country/LV – you’ll see that we basically have humanities and “caretaker” fields of study segregated for women. Furthermore, very lovely domestic violence protections (basically none compared to the benchmark for the current year), and a host of other social problems. I still consider it a mild miracle that by far the most accomplished politician of the second independent Latvia is a woman. A lot of that is much more likely attributable to her Canadian upbringing, rather than to the intricacies of Latvian culture.

This is true. I suppose there might be a special fuse that ignores this, or the ballistics they use makes it irrelevant because it lands within that time.

Anyway, here's some interviews from people who live close to the Russian border in Finland, who want to go to buy cheap fuel there despite the war. The first lady in the interview, who is married to a Russian guy, tells in a video that she's conflicted because they have relatives in Russia and friends in Ukraine, but concludes that let all flowers bloom and don't judge anyone for their opinions :dumb: (maybe the flowers she means are Gvodzika (carnation), Akatsiya (acacia) and Pion (peony)?) she also runs a Facebook group for people who go to fill their tanks in Russia

https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-12525516

quote:

- It was nice to fill up when there were no queues.

This is how Mirva Sukhanov, who lives in Imatra, right next to the eastern border, tells us. She filled up her car in Svetogorsk, Russia, last Tuesday for the first time in two years. Sukhanov is able to cross the border thanks to her Russian husband.

- Svetogorsk has changed a lot in two years. The city has become more international and cleaner, with fences along the roads and traffic lights," Sukhanov says.

Many people from the eastern border are now planning refuelling trips to Russia, despite the war. Near the eastern border, there has been a habit of fetching cheap fuel from the Russian side. Petrol or diesel has been carried not only in car tanks but also in jerry cans to storage.

Because of restrictions on corona, the gasoline rally along the eastern border came to a grinding halt in the spring of 2020, when passenger and passenger traffic between Finland and Russia was suspended. Last Monday, the Russian government announced that it would lift the entry restrictions on corona as of 15 July.

Finland already lifted its own restrictions last week.

The border is less than ten kilometres from the centre of Imatra. In Svetogorsk, fuel cost about 90 cents a litre at the beginning of the week, according to Sukhanov.

In Finland, prices are almost three times as high. In Imatra, 95-octane petrol cost around €2.47 per litre and diesel around €2.42 at the beginning of the week.

Before the koruna, Mirva Sukhanov visited Russia three times a month. Now she plans to continue her trips across the border for refuelling and pleasure on a more regular basis.

- It's such a big saving at these petrol and diesel prices. We have two cars in the family. Put that money away too, so we can go on a trip somewhere.

Sukhanov is not the only one who is happy about the freedom to travel. On social media, for example in the Facebook group "Pumpers in Russia", the discussion about pump trips has already become heated.

Hanna Laurila from Kouvola plans to go to Russia as soon as she gets her visa.

- I miss Vyborg so much for beauty treatments and shopping. Of course, refuelling is also important to me. I'm going to fill up our family's two cars," says Laurila.

Laurila used to visit Russia about three times a month, sometimes more. She had a visa for more than 20 years without interruption.

- My last visit to Russia was on 3 March 2020. Almost a year and a half of my two-year visa was wasted. Now I'm getting a one-year visa to start with.

Laurila believes she will be criticised in many places for her travel decision.

- I know many people are hostile to travelling to Russia, but I don't care! I noticed already during the corona that many people condemn travel. I have a few acquaintances who live in Vyborg, no one is hurt if I meet them.

- Am I being selfish when I want to fill up my cars with cheaper petrol and get my beauty treatments cheaper and of better quality in Vyborg. Maybe. I just can't think of any rational reason why I shouldn't go. This world situation will not be solved by staying at home," he continues.

Petri Puustinen from Joensuu submitted his passport application for a new visa to the visa application office on Tuesday. He received the green card for his car from his insurance company, which is required in Russia.

- It feels good to be travelling again. Many people have already been negative about Russia in the past. The Russian invasion has increased that number. Here in the East, 'Russophobia' is still strong. People who live in Russia are people too," Puustinen says.

Puustinen has many acquaintances in Russia whom he would like to meet. But cheap fuel is the main reason for travelling.

- I drive between 60 000 and 100 000 kilometres a year in my job, so there are big savings in fuel costs. I get a fair hourly wage for the time I spend behind the border.

International money transactions have become more difficult in Russia. The European Union, the United States and Britain, among others, have imposed economic sanctions on a large number of Russian banks.

According to the Foreign Office (go to another service), credit card companies Visa, Amex and Mastercard have announced that cards issued by them in the EU, for example, will no longer work in Russia.

Petri Puustinen from Joensuu still has about 40 000 roubles in his wallet and believes he can easily find out where to exchange euros for roubles.

It is still unclear under what conditions Russia will allow foreigners into the country. The main concern for tankers is whether a negative COVID test result is still required for entry.

A test taken for travel purposes must be obtained and paid for at a private health centre.

However, according to some of the participants in the discussion, pcr tests have not been requested at the border for a long time. Sukhanov's corona certificates were also not checked at the border early this week.
