A big problem with the gore genre is streaming too. Big streaming services won't let gore movies onto them, and the few gore companies that have tried streaming (Unearthed, A Baroque House) have generally had little success. I think a big part of it is the audience for these movies are physical media collectors. I don't really wanna stream Traces of Death or Orozco, I want to own it. But that makes the genre harder to grow, because people are hesitant to spend $20-$30 on a DVD or blu ray of a movie they've never seen.

I'm talking about gore films like Toetag Pictures, Unearthed, Black Lava Entertainment, etc. not like Dead Alive or French Extremity gore films.

Yeah there are so many movies that I hear about or find on Letterboxd and it's like... Not streaming, not even out there to pirate, the only possible way to see it is to buy off some shady third party storefront.

I don't even own a physical media player lmao

my xbox does a lot of heavy lifting as a dvd / bluray player these days, or you could grab a pretty cheap region-free one someplace

if youre into collecting DVDs/BluRays a region free player is 100% a wise investment. I waited for years and then finally got to watch all the movies I had accidentally bought that were the wrong region.

Or just if you like foreign stuff.

Back when I owned a DVD player, it was always region free just because otherwise I’d have to collate and organize my media by region and fuuuuck that.

i always felt bad for VHS collectors because DVDs and Blu Rays dont degrade with time (afaik, correct me if I'm wrong), so if they had held out for one more generation of tech their collections could last forever

Manufacturers are sorta cagey about this issue, but most commercial DVDs are expected to last 30 - 40 years if treated well and not exposed to conditions that would damage them. The exception is the very first generation of DVDs that were released, which have notorious quality issues. I had a DVD box set of the Peter Gunn TV show that came out early in the DVD life cycle, and the discs have degraded/become unplayable even though they're stored alongside thousands of other discs that are completely fine. As a paranoid person, I started to digitize my collection when COVID hit, and now everything's streaming on the Plex and is way easier to access. Nothing's dying off now!

Even if you don't have a TV to have a regular player on, there's portable players (affordable ones!) you can hook up to your computer that work wonders. Definitely will always recommend giving physical media a sincere chance and try, especially with companies gambling on letting history fade away rather than thinking there's still a potential audience for it. Digitize that poo poo too if you have the time

Finally got round to watching After Midnight and I loved it. Felt like a mashup of a creature feature with the very talky relationship drama of the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy (which I love, and I honestly wondered if the title was a reference to those films!). I bought the special edition Blu ray that comes with The Battery, which I had already seen and thought was fantastic.

Pretty sure I need to watch everything involving Jeremy Gardner, Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (already seen Resolution and The Endless).

check the feeds.

I highly recommend it. They’re one of my favorite collective of filmmakers going right now.

Gardner also did Ted Montana Will Survive! which isn’t horror but I thought was a lot of fun. And it was free on YouTube last I saw.

Brea Grant is also a collaborator with them and I think Best Friends Forever was very much in the same spirit of films. What I call “relationship movies while a horror movie happens over there”. Her follow up 12 Hour Shift is a better film but a different vibe. She also just did Torn Hearts but I haven’t seen it.

its more succinct than Shutter Island and gets the Silent Hill vibes across much more quickly and neatly. Shutter Island gets stuck in the narrative for too long, compelling as it is, Offseason gets in an out in under 90 minutes.

Yeah it refers to a specific process of looping it to record multiple takes, but it's used commonly to refer to any out of place or obvious dubbing, especially adding in lines from a character when their back is turned to the camera.

I saw Blood Diner for the first time a few weeks ago and it has some of the most aggressively terrible ADR/overdubbing I've ever heard. I actually paused it a few minutes in and looked up if it was originally an English movie and I was somehow watching a crappy USA dub of a foreign film. But that's what it sounds like, some bullshit 0 budget dub of like old Godzilla or Hercules movies from the '60s.

The movie itself is complete batshit, ridiculous over the top gore and more nudity than some pornos from that era. 3 words: Topless. Cheerleader. Aerobics.

Highly recommend.

Yah bc im talking film not tv. Also im not talking about Hannibal the character specifically, but rather the movies as a whole.

Also two more Manhunter thoughts:

Ryan Gosling in BR2049/Drive def gives off some similarities to William Peterson in Manhunter its kinda funny

it should be called MANNhunter

Manhunter is loving great, it's got a fantastic mood and I love everyone and everything in it. Noonan is an all-timer villain and Cox's Lecter (Lecktor???) is chilling and very different from the Hannibal you're used to. I appreciate why Hopkins' take is so iconic and has overshadowed the idea of the character, but it's a very different kind of approach. Hopkins is playing Lecter as the literal devil, it's an intense and otherworldly performance. Cox is playing him as a perfectly reasonable doctor who realized one day that eating people is a good idea and he happens to be quite good at it. The reasonableness to his performance is incredible.

Silence is probably the better film, and it certainly has an understanding of the language of cinema in a way that Manhunter or frankly very few films overall have, but holy hell Manhunter is a movie.

I also think Manhunter does a better job of showing how Leckter gets inside of Graham's head than Lecter does inside Clarice's. SoTL makes Lecter a little too villainous, the way he taunts Clarice is a little too overtly malicious.

In Manhunter, Leckter certainly taunts and plays with Graham, but you get the sense that Graham is disturbed/haunted far more by the fact that a hosed up dude like Leckter exists than he is at Leckter's personal taunts.

I guess a better way of what I'm trying to say is Manhunter makes Graham meet Leckter/the Tooth Fairy and become scared and haunted at the evils of the world, whereas SotL just makes Clarice scared of Lecter, which is fine but personally less interesting to me.

I realize also im comparing two different stories.

Eh, he resents Will because Will was instrumental in his capture. He admires Clarice, he enjoys loving with her because he needs control but I think he also very much respects her. If I remember correctly he never tries to kill her or get her killed, he just gets in her head because that's what he does. He legit wants to hurt Will though, and he tries to get his family killed.

That's what makes Manhunter so great though. Cox is so restrained and hes maliciously hunting Will and his family, whereas Lecter is just loving with Clarice and acting much more malicious and sinister despite offering no real threat to her.

I think Silence of the Lambs falls short personally bc film wise im definitely a style over substance and Manhunter is so loving stylish in a way only Michael Mann can do and I love it.
