You need size if you need range since the signal strength decreases. If you only need low range scanning they can be very small. IIRC the Trophy system used a tiny fire control radar to detect incoming projectiles

All these vehicle-based laser machines aren't going to be available to a lot of the countries with mostly mechanized infantry vulnerable to drones I have no idea what the best small anti-drone measures are, but there doesn't seem to be all that much. Those big EM guns currently need dedicated vehicle support, so possibly working on miniaturization of that? Anti-drone drones? There doesn't seem to be anything reliable besides having electronic warfare units deny the whole area. edit: Thought this was interesting it's set to some typically tasteless meme music but the into to this video has some pretty crazy video (specifically the one where they play it back in slo mo) from switchblades. The second half is one of the hosts unboxing a switchblade set. Didn't an airport try that against civilian drones (and gave up because while falcons will happily hunt pigeons, they don't care about weird plastic things)? E: apparently it was the Dutch police and they gave up because the eagles were unmotivated to hunt for things they didn't perceive as prey. steinrokkan fucked around with this message at 17:21 on Jul 8, 2022 |

My understanding is that the anti-drone laser systems are being developed independently of the Bradley AA-capable turret program.

The response similar to real life missiles will be automated turret systems that any military will find a big need for as drones continue to grow and become more and more ubiquitous.

It's not nothing. It's a reinforced company's worth of vehicles, which Ukraine is already in short supply of. Of course, if we just hand over a few brigades worth of tanks and IFVs in 3 months it won't matter, but so far the West doesn't seem inclined to outright build operational formations for Ukraine.

I definitely agree that it’s not nothing, but the tweet attempts to claim that it’s a quote-unquote great cache of combat vehicles abandoned in Lysychansk, when this 1) was gathered from the entire entire area of the would-be cauldron even according the Russian commentators, 2) likely is in the ballpark of daily Ukrainian armour losses for the hot areas. It’s a loss alright, just not the loss Russians want to make an appearance of.

This and stuff like the HIMARS "kills", or a while back there was drone footage of a UA mechanized attack getting bombarded and retreating in good order- all this seems like a flailing response to much more convincing footage released every day from the ukrainian side. Like, you could see the ukrainians stopping to pick up their dismounts. Nearly identical russian videos show the vehicles speeding away from their buddies only to unceremoniously blow up 75m down the road.

You know we also don't know the condition of these vehicles. While they may look real nice from afar the turrets could be sabotaged or the electronics inside of the tank. It's a little different from when the taliban was driving around doing sideshows in m1 Abrams

Russia is pulling troops from other borders and poo poo to get things back in order. They are running out of steam temporarily. If we start seeing gulags get liquidated then things are dire for the offensive.

Cpt_Obvious posted:I assume this is to be more mobile? Kind of. M142 is mounted on a truck that goes ~80 km/h on highway, and M270 is mounted on a Bradley frame (tracks), but can still go ~60 km/h. I doubt either of those are being driven at max speed on rural Ukrainian roads, unless the Russian army alone isn’t meeting the desired health hazard levels.
