Down to Western Kentucky where my parents were born
And there's a backwards old town that's often remembered
So many times that my memories are worn

Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry, my son, but you're too late in asking

Mary Alice had a baby and he looked just like I did
We got married on a Monday and I been working ever since
Every week down at the Ford Plant but now they say they're shutting down
God damned Reagan in the White House and no one there gives a drat

Double Digit unemployment, TVA be shutting soon
While over there in Huntsville, They puttin' people on the moon

So I took to runnin' numbers for this man I used to know
And I sell a few narcotics and I sell a little blow
I ain't getting rich now but I'm gettin' more than by
It's really tough to make a living but a man just got to try

If I died in Colbert County, Would it make the evening news?
They too busy blowin' rockets, Puttin' people on the moon

Mary Alice quit askin' why I do the things I do
I ain't sayin' that she likes it, but what else I'm gonna do?
If I could solve the world's problems I'd probably start with hers and mine
But they can put a man on the moon
And I'm stuck in Muscle Shoals just barely scraping by

Mary Alice got cancer just like everybody here
Seems everyone I know is gettin' cancer every year
And we can't afford no insurance, I been 10 years unemployed
So she didn't get no chemo so our lives was destroyed
And nothin' ever changes, the cemetery gets more full
And now over there in Huntsville, even NASA's shut down too

Another Joker in the White House, said a change was comin' round
But I'm still workin' at The Wal Mart and Mary Alice, in the ground
And all them politicians, they all lyin' sacks of poo poo
They say better days upon us but I'm sucking left hind tit
And the preacher on the TV says it ain't too late for me
But I bet he drives a Cadillac and I'm broke with some hungry mouths to feed

I wish I'z still an outlaw, was a better way of life
I could clothe and feed my family still have time to love my pretty wife
And if you say I'm being punished. Ain't he got better things to do?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscle_Shoals,_Alabama posted:

Under President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration during the Great Depression, the Tennessee Valley Authority was established to create infrastructure and jobs, resulting in electrification of a large rural area along the river. The Ford Motor Company did build and operate a plant for many years in the Listerhill community, three miles east of Muscle Shoals; it closed in 1982 as part of industrial restructuring when jobs moved out of the country.[6][7]

During World War I President Wilson authorized a dam on the Tennessee River just downstream of Muscle Shoals to help power nitrate plants for munitions.[17] The first plant started producing nitrates two weeks after the armistice, but the dam was not completed until 1924.

Meanwhile, in 1922 Henry Ford tried to buy the nitrate works and the unfinished dam. The Michigan car manufacturer and industrialist proposed leasing the uncompleted hydro-electric dam at Muscle Shoals on the Tennessee River in Alabama. The US War Department had begun the project during World War I, and engineers estimated a cost of $40 million to complete. At this time, public projects were financed either through raising taxes—which, Congress was unwilling to do at the time- or by issuing bonds. For the Muscle Shoals project, the proposal was for 30-year bonds at 4% interest.

Ford and his friend and fellow inventor Thomas Edison balked at the idea that the US government should have to pay $48 million in interest on top of the $40 million they would have to pay back—all for a project that would benefit the public (the argument being that the hydro-electric dam and accompanying fertilizer plants would create jobs and revitalize the area). Responding to the bond issue, Edison remarked: “Any time we wish to add to the national wealth, we are compelled to add to the national debt.”[18] Edison and Ford hoped that a new monetary system could be created where dollar bills were issued directly to workers and manufacturer, with the money being backed by the goods they produced rather than the gold and silver held in bank vaults.[19][20][21] Congress eventually rejected Ford's idea.

One of the best worst things about the whole situation is that fixing the problem will just make it worse

Isbell and the 400unit came through my hometown in... 2008 or 2009 right before he blew up. Played in our old historic theater for $4000. I think it'd be a little more expensive now.

I helped them load their stuff back into their van after and they were super cool with having a 15 year old kid bothering them lol. He's a good guy from my limited experience

I saw Isbell and the 400 unit at Memphis in May back around 2014. They put on a good show. I'm glad he's been successful, it's been nice to listen to someone's music for 20 years and hear continual progress and sharpening of skills.

He covers Townes van Zandt from time to time and it's a whole different level of sadness. Bring a spare hankie kinda music.

If you want simpler, sad bluegrassy music, look up Benjamin Tod.

I grew up in the Seventh Day Adventist church. They're big on vegetarianism so we had a lot of exposure to their fake meat Loma Linda house brand. It was fine as long as you accepted it on its own merits. If you were expecting meat it sucked big time. The meat substitutes now are much tastier and better textured. My biggest objection is having to dig through four layers of plastic to get to my mushroom burger. Sod that, I'll just make a chick pea curry.

I somewhat regularly look at the little towns in rural Japan that are just a few thousand houses packed together with everything really close together and wish that I could live somewhere like that. Minus the lack of job opportunities and poo poo like that. Just everything packed close enough together that you can bike everywhere easily despite rural living. Would own. Even a good bike friendly and affordable city would be 11/10, it's not like I go outside anyway

I live in a rural area in America, next door to a school. By sheer luck an actual little community has developed around the school. Got a few apartments for denser housing. A small grocery store with a small bank branch attached to it, with a postal pickup out front. A local restaurant and a daycare. All within walking distance. I always took it for granted until I became more politicaly conscious and started seeing how hosed things are in this country.

Also I saw black beans mentioned. I've got my black bean patties perfected and I don't care if I ever eat another hamburger.
