what was the episode where Dave was obliquely building up to a big reveal of a famous historical figure and when he finally said the name Gareth had absolutely no reaction because he didn't know who they were

I've recommended it before in the thread, but The Tichborne Situation is amazing, especially if you enjoy Wil Anderson as a guest. Pretty long episode too, will get quite a few miles out of it

Pretth much any Will Anderson episode is a safe bet for good times. Maybe not Macquarie Island.

lol that this thread is most active when someone asks for recommendations because we fall all over each other to be the first one to say "New York to Paris Car Race and Cereal Men." Not a complaint, I always get a couple of good ones to relisten to out of everyone's lists.

I like the Ugly Laws one. It's horrible, but there are lots of funny riffs. They tone down the riffing on depressing episodes later in the series, which is probably for the best, because making jokes about a chained up disabled person having berries tossed up his rear end for money is probably not a great look, but I love the enthusiasm.

Thank you friends, I think I have generated a list long enough to get us a good chunk of the way and then some.

Edit: will post final list later but will include the newest Aaron Burr episodes.

Oh we are definitely listening to Trapper Nelson since he was a local legend where I grew up and the area we are moving to. Grew up going to his park and learning about him in school. Also, his brother definitely killed him, could have referred Dave to a few first hand sources on that.

We're normal now.
We love your family.
All I remember of the Glenn Burke episode (possibly purposefully) is the great intro to the story where Dave's just listing off young Glenn's characteristics - class clown, highly involved with his church, performed in two choirs and served as an usher - to Gareth's confusion. Then he hits "He bathed two or three times a day, but he never felt clean." "Ahhhhhhhh...Hmm. That's a little twist. Safe to say right now, maybe we've hit our first flag?"

Oh, and then Gareth brings up Andy Reid in the NFL's Punt Pass & Kick finals:

He was 13 years old.

I really need to get back into listening to The Dollop. It was one of many things that I stopped doing back in 2020 because I reached Peak Misery and couldn't cope with even comedic injustices.

I really hope they do a UK tour again.

I will admit that I also kinda stopped listening to the Dollop for various reasons. Partially because, yeah, it did get bleak at times. But I recently jumped back into it with some old eps and it rekindled my love for it. It might help to go back to familiar episodes and/or episodes that are on youtube and filmed in studio. The extra visual back and forth helps.

I get it. I really do. But there are hundreds of episodes and a good portion aren't soul crushing.

it is more than okay to skip episodes once you hit the "oh this is Dave using history to illustrate a lovely thing that's happening today and I can't deal with that" point

If there are any must-hear comedic bits you accidentally miss that way, I'm sure the thread will point them out

I would not mind the Dollop going back into This American Life territory like they were in at the very beginning. It just feels like really fun history stuff has been used up. 4 episodes on how maybe Hamilton is a piece of poo poo is not that funny.

It's a shame, because I really find those episodes harder to listen to. Not because it's Australia but just because any story that starts in the 1700s really does feel like a history lesson. Gimme a guy who did absolutely batshit insane stuff for a few years then faded away, don't give me someone's entire boring-rear end life story.
