if the hangup with Malkin not resigning ends up being 4 years vs 3 then what the gently caress Hextal just give him the extra year the team is going to be on their victory lap anyways but if it's some bigger hang up on Malkin's part than idk. I love the guy but have a hard time drumming up sympathy

For what it's worth, Evolving Hockey predicted Nichushkin's value for an 8 year contract to be a AAV of $6.2M and Dom at The Athletic predicted an 8 year contract for Nichushkin to come in at $5.5M AAV, so $6.1 isn't as absurd in that context, but still, that's a lot for a long time. here's structure and the NMC/NTC:

Some rationale on Samsonov, though I honestly thought they’d qualify him. It’s surprising that they didn’t, but not unreasonable given the performance.

Jagr got that because he was a pissbaby who talked openly about how much he hated Pittsburgh.

He was a loving magnificent player who if anything is historically underrated, and he mellowed some with age, but he torched every bridge down to cinders on his way out of Pittsburgh. Malkin apparently hates Sullivan's guts at this point but he's taken the wiser policy of not saying anything about anything in public at least.

Malkin is right to be annoyed.
It's one thing to be treated like a second banana during the season when it comes to linemates, but another altogether to get the contractual run-around and to always have your friends/wingers traded away for more toys for Sid.
I can understand the poor guy getting frustrated

I think it's gonna be Seattle for Malkin most likely. Make a big splash and all that and they have lots of cap space and are probably dumb enough to give him giant term.

Other possibilities: Anaheim, Ottawa, New Jersey, maybe Dallas. These are mostly teams that should be tanking but are too dumb to do so. Capitals maybe but I doubt it. Chicago is pretty clearly tanking so they won't be interested. The Islanders are going to be too occupied signing their own guys with their remaining space most likely. The Rangers and Hurricanes don't really have the long term cap space for more than a super short term or easily tradeable deal which he isn't going to be interested in. Flyers, Panthers, Knights, Kings are capped out. Yzerman is too smart to tie up his cap long term on a player that's almost finished. Sabres might be a possibility if Malkin's strictly going to go to the highest bidder, they have tons of cap space.

Writing all that out, it seems to me that the Penguins could pretty easily re-sign him if both sides had any real interest in it, but this appears to be a mutually agreed divorce.

Seattle really is the obvious option all around. They have tons of space. They have no particular thing they're going to need it for anytime soon. They probably have a major lust for a marketing/PR splash and something to excite season ticket buyers. Malkin is an ideal player for them because he will ignore their idiot coach and do his thing (he was the one guy that still performed at pretty near the same level when Mike Johnston was trying to destroy the Pens). He can be in Seattle the one thing he could never be in Pittsburgh, captain and unquestionably The Man.

Perron is a really good player but he's also at the age where there's a huge danger of him suddenly overnight becoming unplayably slow. It'll be very interesting seeing which team signs him and for how much and how long.

He's also the practically perfect model of a Sullivan forward: he does everything well except finish. Wouldn't be shocked if the Pens were in on him.

Interesting PIT qualified Kappy but not Heinen, I'd kinda think as a former ~20 goal scorer~ and with 30pts in 40 games last year Kapanen should have the stronger arbitration case of the two if they're scared of cap hit. But then again maybe Pittsburgh just doesn't want Heinen at all, even though he and Kappy scored about the same last year.

Kind of a bummer about Heinen. I thought he was a very useful player. Kapanen getting QO'ed makes perfect sense. He goes from a 3.2 million cap hit to 1.5. wonder if they're working on an E Rod extension.

I'm fine with the Geno going to market. It has been an awesome run. Putting up great numbers with hand me downs or leftovers. GM JR traded away your good winger. But it's time I think. I wonder now if they think about giving Carter the O Zone starts and spend on more depth in the form of wingers and a legit excellent 3c.

No Malkin does make it the team weaker, but I wonder if they're willing to take the trade in production for better suppression and improved depth scoring.
