Acquiring Matt Murray at nearly $5M AAV just smacks of desperation and overthinking from Dubas. It’s a bet that should cost him and the people around him their jobs if it doesn’t pay off, but you could say that about a bunch of his moves and he’s still here. I don’t think the Leafs cap is as bad as some think, they’ve got a little over $6M to sign Sandin, Engvall, and a backup which should be perfectly doable. If they want to add anybody then they’ll need some roster surgery but Holl, Muzzin, and Kerfoot could all be replaced depending on who they’re targeting imo.

I can understand Seattle dumping Donato and Sprong.. those are both defensive liabilities (but still valuable players overall because of their offensive contributions). Unfortunately Seattle has a bunch of those types already.. Eberle, Donskoi, McCann, this Mattie Beniers kid.. On the other hand their only forwards with a reputation for being strong in their own end are Yanni Gourde and Brandon Tanev.. Maybe Jaden Schwartz at a stretch. They need some more forwards who can face up to the other team's scorers and not get crushed.

Mind_Taker posted:it’s 6 x $5M for Rakell Going long term to lower the AAV of all their players as much as possible, because they will be blowing it up and getting in the tank in two years and nothing beyond that matters. That said Guentzel and Jarry both need new contracts next year and I dunno how they're going to have the cap space to retain both, even assuming Malkin is gone. They will both be extremely hot commodities on the market and will get megapaid.

That seems like a reasonable price for Rakell. e: ^^^ yeah i don’t think term matters for the pens here. They have a couple years to try to make a run, then it’s over anyway.

The writing was on the wall for Malkin's departure the day they signed Jeff Carter to a 2 year extension. Given the team's other activity it's painfully clear that he doesn't really want to return and the team doesn't really want him back.

It's 100% Carolina if he's willing to put aside his salary demands for the best opportunity at winning a cup.. the guy would be such a natural fit next to Slavin on that top pairing.. It's almost a perfect fit stylistically and matching up his strengths with what Carolina needs.

Mind_Taker posted:it’s 6 x $5M for Rakell Trying to replace Malkin by committee. Rakell is a player that the organization has been after for a while too. He just turned 29 and got hot brained, but he put up 13 in 19 with 8%. I know finishing is a concern with him and Think tank chart of age is very relevant. He's a lot more of a top 6 winger than everyone else left on the roster as well. Edit: If I had to guess Hextall and the org have a list of contracts and $$$ amounts that they are working through. Rust done. Letang was next and a bigger priority than Malkin. Got done. Went to Malkin with the $ and term they were comfortable with to keep the team competitive. Geno passed. Next on the list was Rakell because yeah they need a top 6 winger either way. rex rabidorum vires fucked around with this message at 03:45 on Jul 12, 2022 |

For what it’s worth I think the Letang contract is great for Pittsburgh for the reason you stated.

Rakell fits with Sid (and Sullivan's system) so it makes sense paying a little premium on a known quantity vs gambling and getting stuck with another Kapanen Granted that's another "compete now" signing that makes no sense to me unless Hextall has himself zeroed in on a fresh 2C already
