I think half of the problem is letting people freely be gigantic shitbags without repercussions. Posters are, in general, far too free to be absolutely awful to both each other and to mods and admins. The people who think they ought to be free to say slurs, call other people pedophiles without evidence (and I don’t mean the MiA thread), or call the site owner “a limp dicked New York Jew” like someone did in QCS without any sort of probation can get stuffed. The behavior breeds immense toxicity and makes any reigning in of the worse parts of SA drat near impossible when it’s allowed to go unpunished. However, the other half of the problem has been the admins. When you do draw a line in the sand, it’s often a knee jerk reaction when spending even a little bit of time to look over the situation and get some context would be much better. Closing a QCS thread with “if you don’t like it take it up with Jeffrey” is the completely wrong way to handle it and only infuriates people and breeds ill will. There never seems to be any contrition, or any sense that the admins listened to what people had to say rather than shutting something down to make people stop talking about whatever the current problem is. There’s neither the firm hand needed to reign in toxicity nor the ability to communicate that allows for a softer touch. It’s the worst of both worlds.
