Creepy as gently caress to find out there's actually people here in Denmark who angrily and openly repeat Russian propaganda about Ukrainian being controlled by neo-Nazis and justifying the deliberate ongoing genocide of the Ukrainian people by Russia.

I mean since moving here I've been repeatedly disillusioned from my naive beliefs that Scandinavia was a socialist worker's holdout, but actually supporting Russian imperialism was a new low.

New rule: politics and work are a volatile mix.

No, growing up in the 1970s, in Canada, reading about other countries culture, politics and geography, the Scandinavian countries were ( in books written at the time) quite wonderful sounding.

Obviously in the succeeding decades I wasn't tracking the erosion of the welfare states, so moving here was quite the shock to have what you could call my youthful illusions shatter against the brick wall of reality. Whiplash.

Plague Island. Ghettos. Seizing jewelry from refugees. Paludan. All that.

(Canada has its own stupendously evil and sad history of brutality to deal with, but that's for CanPol)

Ed: we also had a case at work where a Russian employee posted a defense of the invasion on Teams that may have gotten HR involved but I didn't see the actual alleged content and it was back in February, plus, she's Russian so... I can sort of understand it.

The various sources available in the early 70s painted a much rosier picture to Canadians, is my point, that I unconsciously carried with me until I got here.

I’m like the opposite of a nationalist, but while there was never a ‘good ol’ time’, things were certainly looking better before the rise of the nationalist right in the 90s (caused in a large part by the rise of the neoliberal thatcher/reagan inspired right obviously).

Having lived and worked in a bunch of very different places over the last 15 years, it’s honestly bad, and has gotten worse, all over. While there are plenty of things wrong, and you can find occasional divergent opinions, Scandinavia is consistently scoring as one of the most egalitarian, most democratically controlled, least bigoted, least corrupt, least violent, places on the planet.

As far as people supporting putin/russia; outside this thread, I have only met one person who is mostly on the putin side since the war started, and he is a sad, conspiracy believing, nye borgerlige voting, mega dumbo. I think it’s probably different at different work places though.

I'm not a fascist. I'm a priest. Fascists dress up in black and tell people what to do.
The nationalist right came back like a letter in the mail as a response to putting globalization into hyperdrive in the 90s, which is part of the neoliberal reformation of society and the final crushing of labours strength. After that the neoliberals went to work to making labour and the left think it was a good thing, actually.

The only person I’ve met IRL with a pro-Russian bias is the hyper edgelord at my work, neatly adding ”Putin is good” to his repertoir alongside ”feminism has gone too far”, ”the muslims are bleeding the Swedish tax payer dry”, and ”if you’re getting handouts from the government you should be forced to work outside picking trash”.

He’s like every bad opinion from 15 years ago rolled into one and I think he has trouble keeping up with the newer ones. Right now he’s on a crusade against the ”hen”-pronoun.

I’m glad he’s also a teacher 👍

I did know a guy some years back, who I think would probably stan Putin. But he was also pro-Trump, thought everything was 100% better in the US and that people should pull themselves up by their bootstraps, instead of being lazy.

He was also jobless (due to longterm illness) and living on government aid for ~15 years, last I talked to him.

The '70s was when Danish social democracy died and there was a massive economic crisis to boot, I just find it strange to refer to that decade as some sort of golden age. The bones were picked clean by Nyrup and Fogh ground the bones into dust.

I've never encountered anyone IRL who actually supports the invasion, and only a few on social media who appear to have dived headlong into the Great Reset WEF conspiracy soup and what have you, but they're not my friends and I give that poo poo a wide berth. The only time to discuss politics at work is to agitate for unionization and better pay and benefits, maybe trash talk the boss.

for a "culturally radical" paper, politiken is probably your best bet, with information a somewhat more traditionally leftie daily. i always found politiken a bit cloying when i lived in denmark, but honestly denmark in general rather disagreed with me and both of these papers are generally reasonably high quality and mostly stick to the generally acceptable spectrum of opinion in danish mainstream society. depending on what exactly "tankie" means, a danish communist party still maintains an online newspaper called arbejderen.dk which is seriously left, sometimes has interesting pieces but which remains quite anti-NATO and anti-EU.

Information calls itself social liberal and Politiken always has been. The latter has become especially terrible over the years, full of clickbait headlines and Noa Reddington, who is the worst.

I like solidaritet.dk as an alternative to arbejderen.dk, it's similar but less fawning over China and Venezuela.

Anyone balking at "tankies" in its modern denotation will probably not enjoy Arbejderen. Also recommending Redox if you want to know what the baddies are up to, but it's pretty specific in its subject matter.

I'm betting all in on a S + SD government. According to polls that's about enough for a total of 55%.

You were supposed to take those out of the deck.
What are the chances of SD overtaking M and poor little Ulf having to make way for statsminister Jimmie? Also which out of MP, L & KD are likeliest to drop out of parliament, I'm assuming L?

BonHair

It would be interesting to see if SD is willing to actually be part of a government, given the track record of DF over here. Both options are probably bad for them, since they won't be able to solve every problem by genociding Muslims.

L is actually polling above 4%, MP has a higher chance of dropping under. That alone would remove the possibility to have a left coalition leading the government without compromising with any party further right than C. I don't think SD will outperform M, but that remains to be seen.
