Sri Lanka looks to be deteriorating - both President and PM are resigning. I've given it some thought and here's one possible outcome. Sri Lanka's president has resigned after fleeing the country and the government has all but collapsed. Best case guesses are maybe 6 months to maybe sorta get things back to normal. In the face of enormous riots, unrest, and the beginnings of a mass famine, international aid is extended. People aren't stupid - they see that neither China nor India is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. Both offers are accepted by different factions, resulting in a Chinese airbase being built and a heavy garrison of Indian troops stationed. Tensions rise as China continues to rattle their sabers globally, and with their new foothold in the Indian Ocean, they feel secure in escalating. Ships begin loitering threateningly and shadowing Indian Navy vessels, ultimately leading to a full blockade as China makes a power play. India does not like the thought of an openly hostile China squeezing them from both sides and a special military operation begins. How long will it take to capture Colombo?2 days Will Nuke General be killed?Yes Total Sri Lankan civillian casualties:500 dead Total military casualties India:3000 dead Total military casualties China.:150000 dead Will the China army regulars hold the lines? No Will the China People's Guard fight to the end?No Will chem/bio weapons be used on invading troops?:Yes Will China launch attacks on the Sri Lankans?Yes Will China launch attacks on Indonesia? No -If yes; will Indonesia retaliate harshly?Yes Will China sacrifice Colombo (gas/nuke it)?No Will the Sri Lankans make a grab for independence?Yes Will Pakistan do anything silly like try for land?Yes Will China burn the tea plantations?Yes How long will India be occupying Sri Lanka?~15 years Will the India/China war catalyze increased terrorism in America? No In the long run, will this war be good or bad for the world?Good

A bit on why Twitter sued Musk, why they're not actually after the $1B breakup fee, and why everyone's brains aren't wired for what's going to go down in court: https://twitter.com/AnnMLipton/status/1547757107788689410?t=6Xn0u1nFhYCPOXuBz0ELRw&s=19 Twitter isn't negotiating for the breakup fee, they want to enforce the sale of The Whole loving Thing because: quote:Yes, that one hundred percent is the goal, because $54.20 is a really big number for Twitter’s investors. It didn’t look so at the time (hence Musk’s attempt to back out), but given where we are now, it would be a windfall. Why should the board care about whether a buyer is willing or unwilling? Once the company is sold, it is dead (from the perspective of the now-former board members and now-former stockholders). Maximizing shareholder value! It will be a death sentence when I rule the world, but it's why Twitter isn't just negotiating to make the $1B breakup fee higher. Everyone involved, except Elon, wants the full $44B to pay themselves out, then go poof. $54.20 per share is more than $36 per share and Twitter's gonna get that bag and won't settle for the breakup fee.

I’ve discussed this in a few places and we’re talking about it some in the lawgoon thread. Twitter has Musk over a barrel. They’re suing for specific performance because the contract Musk wrote has that as the penalty for breach. The $1bn in liquidated damages only occurs if he cannot get financing. He already has financing. Banks have issued the bonds. He has to put in more personally than he originally intended, but he has the money. The Delaware court of chancery is built upon the provision that clear and unambiguous contractual terms will be enforced. If a judge started ignoring terms or rewriting contracts, one of the biggest reasons everyone is incorporated in Delaware disappears. Musk may not be forced to buy Twitter by the court, but that only happens if they settle first. The settlement price right now is around $16-17b which is the difference in current share price and what Musk offered. The complaint from Twitter is very well written and is easy for a layperson to read. The judge in this case doesn’t gently caress around, and, earlier this year, has ordered specific performance when a buyer attempted to use bad faith tactics to tank the deal. This court also moves fast. There will be resolution by October - either Musk will own Twitter or Twitter will be paying a hell of a dividend to shareholders.

Twitter is very clearly in the right from a contractual standpoint. A contract was negotiated, the terms were clear, the contract was signed. Perfomance is due.
