You don't immediately turn to comparative strangers for comfort, so she clearly had some kind of established close relationship with a man who had been in loco parentis since she was a tiny child. He saw his distressed stepchild as fair game when she was extremely vulnerable. He's a goddamn monster, and even the extremely terrible Elon Musk openly calls his father a monster.

I don't know the situation, but if he's the guy that openly bankrolled your entire life thus far I could see turning to him for a favor. It's also entirely possible that he manipulated and took advantage of her, but the kind of person that would marry Errol Musk is a monster and the children they'd create would also quite likely be monsters (I only know one example of the children he's raised but he's 1 for 1 on that front) and it's entirely possible she ran to the rich guy that is attracted to people that look a lot like her because she saw an opportunity. She had another kid with him willingly after all. It's entirely possible that everyone in this story is the worst person you could ever imagine.
