There was probably a better/faster/more powerful car than the GNX in Australia. Therefore it sucks fuckin poo poo.

It could outhandle plenty of other cars and the bodykit is 100% functional and makes very good downforce. Hard to say whats a more iconic car from the late 80's here - the Walky or the VL Turbo. 150Kw with 300Nn was pretty good int he day buuuuuuuut https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naVfjDLz-s0 They could be boosted to the loving moooooon and the chassis utterly overpowered all too easy. I swear I've seen a version of the covered C-pillar, but I don't know if it was a render/artwork, something someone heard and decided to make their own version or what, or maybe I'm getting confused with the E30 M3 which has a whole funky C-pillar/rear window panel thing going on. I fuckin love that Evo II wing though. The Walky vs Turbo thing is tricky, I guess it comes down to the Walky being 'The One' but also it was always a super expensive limited run homologation special that was hugely controversial, while the Turbo was an achievable thing. $32k for a VL Calais Turbo vs $45k for a Walky, $108k in todays dollarydoos.

I fuckin love that Evo II wing though. HSV #001 - I believe it's the only one officially built with the covered C-Pillar. It's in private hands and that must be worth 7 figures now, esp as it's the actual first HSV of them all? https://www.tradeuniquecars.com.au/feature-cars/1504/1988-hsv-vl-ss-group-a-walkinshaw-review-hsv-part-1 Also HSW #001 was a giveaway car so some lucky rear end in a top hat won it. quote:The Walky vs Turbo thing is tricky, I guess it comes down to the Walky being 'The One' but also it was always a super expensive limited run homologation special that was hugely controversial, while the Turbo was an achievable thing. $32k for a VL Calais Turbo vs $45k for a Walky, $108k in todays dollarydoos. Interestingly, the last few Walkys sat in showrooms for quite a quite as they couldn't sell them, despite the initial 500 selling real fast. But yep, even if the Calais was too expensive, there were the cheaper manual VL turbo "Police Pack" you could get for somewhat cheaper. A far better motor than what the VN / VP got and probably a better driving car too. Just dont get into a crash as the shell had the torsional rigidity of wet noodles. I know someone with a stock(!!!!!!) VL turbo with even rear window blinds. How many actually stock ones would even be left...?

Unrelated to actualyl interesting old Holden talk, I've been drinking with some people at Holden and I think my best option is to buy a known good engine and swap into one of my cars, then take the time doing the timing chains on my two. I REALLY want to do the chain(s) swap myself as a learning experience seeing they aren't getting any younger and going to be a niche thing. The parts list alone is north of AUD$600 for 'german quality' parts.

I think its interesting how AI will rank some cars based on performance at the time and other cars as performance vs current standards. We should also rank based on what a normal person or shop could do at the time with mods. A huge part of what made the grand national, mk4 Supra, evos, eclipses, (anything late 80s to early 00s with a turbo and MAF) SO POPULAR was you could boost them to the moon without actually deeply understanding tuning and having a stand alone ecu and dyno. At the time it didn't matter if it was the right way because nobody outside the manufacturers and pro racers knew what right was. A 99 civic si with a turbo, rising rate fuel management unit, and msd boost retard box made 200whp while the above did 500-800whp. In closing the grand national was a mk4 supra for people that liked domestics. Also I'll have a baconator and a medium fry.

Look at how much you could add externally to the 2JZ without touching the bottom end. Now they build everything to be juuuuuust sturdy enough to handle the factory power.
